When we can't find a spice mix at our local grocery store, we try seeing if we can make it ourselves at home! Za'atar spice mix is a flavourful Middle Eastern and Mediterranean seasoning that we use in all sorts of ways. We mix it into our homemade salad dressing, into tofu or tempeh marinades, sprinkle it over roasting veggies, and add it to recipes such as homemade falafels to pack it full of flavour.
Add all the spices into a small jar, mix, and you're good to go!
Storage
Keep in a sealed glass jar away from direct sunlight for months, just like regular spices.

I said it once, and I'll say it again: the scaling feature is amazing 👏 I only had 9g of sumac, so I simply scaled down to 9 portions and added the other ingredients accordingly. Oh, and the spice mix itself is heavenly, too! 😁

I couldn’t find sumac so I subbed lemon zest instead. So easy with mostly pantry staples but adds so much to dishes. Yum!

A lovely idea, Maria - thanks for sharing the tip!

What can I sprinkle this on? Any ideas?

Hey Debbie, a lovely question! We enjoy using this blend in wraps, or on roasted vegetables, flatbread, and chickpeas. We have a Za'atar & Mint Veggie Wrap recipe (pickuplimes.com/recipe/zaatar…), plus more recipes coming soon in our mobile App which use Za'atar 🤗

The combination of the spices is quite amazing. You open the jar and it smells like the Middle East! I added it to a roasted veggie spread I make regularly and it just effortlessly made it exotic and ... just perfect! Thank you for widening my perspective and for taking my tastebuds on a unique journey!

This!! On roasted potatoes, or really any roasted vegetable, is just *chefs kiss*. It’s now my husbands favorite way to make roasted potatoes too. The combination of the warm cumin and the herbs is just so delicious.

What substitute can I use for sumac? I can't find that spice in my country.
Thank you in advance
PUL Team - April 2, 2021, 2:17 a.m.
Great question, Tanja! It may be in an international foods aisle or store, or perhaps online. Lemon pepper seasoning or a dash of lemon zest may help provide the tartness that sumac provides though! Alternatively, you could try omitting it from the recipe and adding some lemon juice when cooking 😀
