Shakshuka is known as an easy and healthy breakfast option in many countries, but it can definitely be enjoyed at any time during the day. We gave our own plant-based spin to the classic dish and used silken tofu, which provides a very "eggy" feel to that of the traditional Shakshuka, especially when combined with kala namak salt.
Preheat the oven to 390Β°F (200Β°C). Add all the traybake ingredients to a 9 x 12 inch (23 x 31 cm) baking dish*.
Mix together, then bake in the oven for 30 minutes.
Meanwhile, mix together the kala namak and turmeric on a plate. Coat the tofu slices lightly with this turmeric mix.
Place the tofu on top of the tomato mixture and press the pieces in a bit. Transfer the baking dish back into the oven and let it bake for another 10 - 15 minutes.
Serve with toasted pitas, and garnish with za'atar, cilantro, and lemon slices if desired. Enjoy!
Notes
β If you don't love spice, consider using less.
β Kala namak, also known as Himalayan black salt, is a salt often used in South Asian cuisine. The sulphur compounds give the salt an egg-like smell and flavour.
* For the oven, we used top and bottom heating (not fan-assisted/convection). The shakshuka can alternatively be cooked on the stove in a wide pan with a lid.

This was really good! I used the "homemade red lentils Tofu" that's on this app instead of a normal store bought silken tofu, and it turned out great. Love the taste and texture. I didn't have black salt,so I just used Nutritional Yeast and normal salt. Also didn't include the spicy ingredients, but added a chillie oil after serving, so my little ones can eat it. Everyone cleared out their plates. Very easy to make and required very little effort. Also didn't need to rob a bank to afford the ingredients - had most of the ingredients leftover from other meals.

Had this dish many times while we were in Israel years ago and have missed it since going vegan. Silken tofu was a great substitute for the traditional egg but mine did not come out of the package nicely enough to slice. No problem, just added it in chunks. Wonderful dish accompanied by vegan challah (Just Egg in place of eggs in my tried and true family recipe). Reheated beautifully in the toaster oven the next day.

I wanted to try this so badly, but because there is no Asian supermarket or toko near my village, Iβve used firm tofu. Iβve soaked the firm tofu in a marinade with the kala namak, tumeric, a splash of milk, 2tsp nutritional yeast and 1tsp mustard immediately after putting the veggies in the oven and it worked perfectly fine. Very satisfying dish. Thank you do much again!

This is SO SIMPLE and SO DELICIOUS! I didn't have bell peppers on hand, so I added a 28 oz can of whole plum tomatoes, drained and crushed by hand. I didn't have any of the suggested garnishes, but I did add some Kalamata olives once it came out of the oven, and it was SO GOOD! This is my new favorite almost-entirely-pantry-based meal for when I don't want to spend a long time in the kitchen but want something hearty and warming. And I love that it works for ANY meal of the day!

In looking through your huge selection of recipes, I could not find a lot that featured these vegetables. Would you consider adding recipes that feature these choices?
10/10 - this recipe is the bomb! We keep making it.
I haven't made this yet but it looks really good and I definitely want to make it in the future. I'd love if there was a way to heart recipes on here but idk how that would be possible lol
Made it for dinner tonight. Really good and filling.
Soooo delicious, and the kala namak (black salt) is an absolute game-changer for vegan egg dishes. Love it!!
absolutely delicious. so easy to make and what amazing flavor this has
I love Shakshuka but this was the first time I made it in the oven! Loved the simplicity and flavour! Thank you so much for a great recipe again!
Really easy and delicious recipe! I tried it with firm tofu, because that was at hand; silken tofu is difficult to get in my town and if it is, it's too expensive. I can imagine the texture is more egglike with silken, but firm was fine enough and the taste was great! Thanks for sharing, will definitely make again!
Oh my goodness, we loved this so much! Having never having tried shakshuka before, I think the tofu had a beautiful flavour and superb texture alongside the vibrant and rich vegetables. I swapped the red peppers for zucchini which worked super well! π₯°
The recipe was a big hit.I was running out of time to pack lunch for my kiddos and tried this simple, tempting shakshuka.Kids loved the recipe.. Thank you Sadia..Stay blessed β€οΈ!!
We ate this fo brunch and it tastes amazing. Finally a perfect substitute for the version with eggs. Thank you have been missing this dish since going plant based.
Thanks for another amazing recipe! Some of my friends came over while this dish was in the oven and they immediately asked me what I was cooking that smelled so good. I can see this meal becoming a staple in our household as itβs delicious, ridiculously easy to make, and wholesome.
This was incredibly delicious! I've had Shakshuka a few times before going vegan and the silken tofu as egg replacement is just perfect! So tasty and the time you actively have to do stuff in the kitchen is so short. I will definitely cook this again soon! Thanks for this wonderful recipe!
