Oven Baked Tofu Shakshuka

50 min

Main

Shakshuka is known as an easy and healthy breakfast option in many countries, but it can definitely be enjoyed at any time during the day. We gave our own plant-based spin to the classic dish and used silken tofu, which provides a very "eggy" feel to that of the traditional Shakshuka, especially when combined with kala namak salt.

Ingredients

Traybake

  • 1⅔ cups (400 g)
    canned diced tomatoes
  • 2
    red bell peppers, chopped
  • 1
    medium red onion, finely chopped
  • 2
red hot chili peppers, seeds removed, minced†
  • 3
    garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 Tbsp (33 g)
    tomato paste
  • 1 Tbsp (15 mL)
    olive oil
  • 1 tsp (2 g)
    ground cumin
  • 1 tsp (2 g)
    ground coriander
  • 1 tsp (6 g)
    salt

'Eggy' silken tofu

  • 1 tsp (4 g)
    kala namak†
  • ½ tsp
    ground turmeric
  • 11 oz (300 g)
silken tofu, cut into 1 cm thick slices

Serve with

  • 5
    small pita breads, toasted

Optional garnish

Make your own

Directions

  1. Preheat the oven to 390Β°F (200Β°C). Add all the traybake ingredients to a 9 x 12 inch (23 x 31 cm) baking dish*.
  2. Mix together, then bake in the oven for 30 minutes.
  3. Meanwhile, mix together the kala namak and turmeric on a plate. Coat the tofu slices lightly with this turmeric mix.
  4. Place the tofu on top of the tomato mixture and press the pieces in a bit. Transfer the baking dish back into the oven and let it bake for another 10 - 15 minutes.
  5. Serve with toasted pitas, and garnish with za'atar, cilantro, and lemon slices if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

  • †If you don't love spice, consider using less.
  • †Kala namak, also known as Himalayan black salt, is a salt often used in South Asian cuisine. The sulphur compounds give the salt an egg-like smell and flavour.
  • * For the oven, we used top and bottom heating (not fan-assisted/convection). The shakshuka can alternatively be cooked on the stove in a wide pan with a lid.

Great!

Karne Steyn - Dec. 9, 2023, 6:08 p.m.

This was really good!
I used the "homemade red lentils Tofu" that's on this app instead of a normal store bought silken tofu, and it turned out great. Love the taste and texture.
I didn't have black salt,so I just used Nutritional Yeast and normal salt. Also didn't include the spicy ingredients, but added a chillie oil after serving, so my little ones can eat it.
Everyone cleared out their plates.
Very easy to make and required very little effort. Also didn't need to rob a bank to afford the ingredients - had most of the ingredients leftover from other meals.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Dec. 10, 2023, 1:28 a.m.

Fantastic to hear you enjoyed the dish, Karne! Using homemade the red lentils tofu from the PUL App is a lovely idea. Happy cooking 🌱

Jackie - Dec. 6, 2023, 2:47 a.m.

This was an easy and delicious recipe. My children (ages 5 and 8) both ate it as well! Success with everyone

Always a big compliment when the kiddos enjoy a dish ☺️ thanks, Jackie!

Zoie - Dec. 3, 2023, 10:16 p.m.

It was a tasty dish but not great for a dinner meal, just missing something. I would exchange the tofu for firm as the silky was too watery and mushy. I enjoyed it for breakfast.

Kate - Nov. 19, 2023, 9:15 a.m.

Absolutely delicious! served with toasted pepitas and Vogels toast.

Zarah - Nov. 13, 2023, 8:51 p.m.

This was delicious! I made it on the stove in a cast iron shallow pan. I didn’t have chillies and used a tablespoon of sriracha hot sauce instead. Really satisfying particularly on a cold, autumnal day!

@What_Flo_eats - Aug. 22, 2023, 8:13 p.m.

Absolutely delicious!!
Loved the Silken Tofu gave an eggy texture and the sauce and veggies was so so rich and delicious, easy to tweak if you want less spicy etc.
We served ours with garlic bread and will be making again very soon!

Amy - July 30, 2023, 8:24 p.m.

I loved it! I really enjoyed getting to make a new dish and experience new flavors and have the ingredients be accessible in my region. Oftentimes I’d love to try out a ton of different recipes from around the world but the ingredients are either not available here in rural Germany or insanely expensive. Silken tofu isn’t really a thing that I can get in my village supermarkets so I got firm tofu instead. The swap worked perfectly! This was so easy and fun to make and it tastes amazing!

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 31, 2023, 4:11 p.m.

Love the swap with firm tofu, Amy, we're so happy to hear the recipe was enjoyed! Hugs to Germany πŸ€—

Chris - July 29, 2023, 9:06 p.m.

Absolutely loved it! Will be making again, might tweak the spice level down a little…. Or I might remember to deseed the chillis πŸ˜‚

Spicy and delicious! - July 28, 2023, 2:11 p.m.

My family liked this recipe a lot. We found it really spicy but the flavor was still there to make up for it. Speaking of flavor, it’s wonderful in this dish. A lot going on but in a good way. My only change next time is I will use firm or extra firm tofu instead. The silken tofu was so slimy I just couldn’t eat it. If you’re a texture person, do not use silken tofu! The dish will be just perfect with firm or extra firm.

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 29, 2023, 3:03 a.m.

Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the recipe, friend 🫢 firmer tofu is a lovely idea!

Anna - July 23, 2023, 2:46 p.m.

Loved this recipe! So flavoursome and well spiced. I'm not quite sure why you need 5 pitta breads, though - are there 2 spare or do 2 people get 2 and the last person only gets 1? Or 1.5 each and 0.5 left over? πŸ˜‚

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 26, 2023, 9:06 p.m.

Hey Anna, so glad it's being enjoyed! We tend to use 1.5 pitas per person - but feel free to enjoy more or less if you wish 😜

Nynke - July 22, 2023, 7:04 p.m.

This was again so good and easy! Never used silken tofu this way, but absolutely loved it. Can't wait for the Android app! Go and make this!

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 23, 2023, 1:56 a.m.

Aww thanks, Nynke! We can't wait to share the Android version πŸ’›

Nynke - July 23, 2023, 6:11 a.m.

Ooh, I now see, that "my go and make this" could be interpreted, as "go and make this app". What I ment was "go and make this food". It is so good! I will patiently wait for the app.

Amazing flavours, will be part of our go to recipes now :)

Natalie - June 27, 2023, 7:46 p.m.

This dish brings an explosion of flavours. I didn’t have silken tofu at hand so I used firm tofu instead. Iβ€˜m currently trying out lots of PUL recipes and feel like it’s going to be very hard to pick a favourite.

Such a big compliment, Natalie, thanks a bunch! Happy cooking 🀩

Hilary - April 19, 2023, 12:41 p.m.

Wow! This recipe was amazing. I did not have canned tomatoes, but instead used fresh cherry tomatoes and it worked so well. Pick Up Limes has been my go to website for years. I have shared it with friends and family and always receive the same feedback---these recipes are delicious, easy to make, and so nourishing. Thank you so much for the years of cooking inspiration <3

After years of watching Pick Up Limes on YouTube, I finally, actually cooked a recipe! Roaring success. Easy and delicious. Served with a hearty olive, garlic bread. Awe so happy to hear, Kim! Hopefully, soon we can share the app on Android πŸ€—

I did it with smoke Tofu and it worked very well, too. As a side dish, because I had no bread, millet.
I am glad I found it. Thanks a lot!

Stacey - March 30, 2023, 9:09 p.m.

We make this all the time on the stovetop but this makes it even easier! I got home from work and my partner needed to run out. It's tough managing kids around a stove so I was grateful to have this version of the recipe in my back pocket! Delicious and, as always, nutritious. Plus, the kids loved it! You know it's good if even the 4 year old wants seconds :)

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 31, 2023, midnight

Awe we're beyond happy to hear, Stacey, thank you! Hugs to you and the little ones πŸ€—

Lois - March 25, 2023, 9:52 p.m.

Hello,

I have a friend who is interested in healthy cooking. I asked her what her favorite vegetables were, and she responded cabbage, broccoli, green beans, and brussel sprouts. In looking through your huge selection of recipes, I could not find a lot that featured these vegetables. Would you consider adding recipes that feature these choices?

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 26, 2023, 9:42 p.m.

Hey Lois, thanks so much for the request! Hopefully soon we can share more recipes that include them πŸ˜ƒ In the meantime, you can find recipes here: pickuplimes.com/recipe/?sb=&a…

Joanne - March 12, 2023, 1:49 a.m.

Had this dish many times while we were in Israel years ago and have missed it since going vegan. Silken tofu was a great substitute for the traditional egg but mine did not come out of the package nicely enough to slice. No problem, just added it in chunks. Wonderful dish accompanied by vegan challah (Just Egg in place of eggs in my tried and true family recipe). Reheated beautifully in the toaster oven the next day.

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 13, 2023, 4:25 a.m.

So happy to hear the recipe was enjoyed, Joanne, thank you πŸ™‚

Anna Robin - March 10, 2023, 8:27 p.m.

I wanted to try this so badly, but because there is no Asian supermarket or toko near my village, I’ve used firm tofu. I’ve soaked the firm tofu in a marinade with the kala namak, tumeric, a splash of milk, 2tsp nutritional yeast and 1tsp mustard immediately after putting the veggies in the oven and it worked perfectly fine. Very satisfying dish. Thank you do much again!

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 10, 2023, 9:50 p.m.

Mmm sounds lovely, Anna, thank you for sharing your experience with the recipe πŸ€—

Maria - March 10, 2023, 12:52 a.m.

This is SO SIMPLE and SO DELICIOUS! I didn't have bell peppers on hand, so I added a 28 oz can of whole plum tomatoes, drained and crushed by hand. I didn't have any of the suggested garnishes, but I did add some Kalamata olives once it came out of the oven, and it was SO GOOD! This is my new favorite almost-entirely-pantry-based meal for when I don't want to spend a long time in the kitchen but want something hearty and warming. And I love that it works for ANY meal of the day!

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 10, 2023, 10:33 p.m.

Ooo we appreciate this so much, Maria, thank you for the glowing review! πŸ₯°

Gesa - March 6, 2023, 4 p.m.

I love Shakshuka but this was the first time I made it in the oven! Loved the simplicity and flavour! Thank you so much for a great recipe again!

Regina - March 6, 2023, 2:58 p.m.

Really easy and delicious recipe! I tried it with firm tofu, because that was at hand; silken tofu is difficult to get in my town and if it is, it's too expensive. I can imagine the texture is more egglike with silken, but firm was fine enough and the taste was great! Thanks for sharing, will definitely make again!

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 7, 2023, 2:11 p.m.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the recipe, Regina!

Charlotte - March 4, 2023, 1:33 a.m.

Oh my goodness, we loved this so much! Having never having tried shakshuka before, I think the tofu had a beautiful flavour and superb texture alongside the vibrant and rich vegetables. I swapped the red peppers for zucchini which worked super well! πŸ₯°
