These brownie bites are deliciously fudgy and yet so wholesome. They make for a lovely snack or dessert and are always a hit when taken to picnics or potlucks. We like to make a big batch to store in the freezer for an on-demand snack when our sweet tooth strikes.
Add the dates, walnuts, cashews, cocoa powder, and salt to a food processor and blend until combined. Careful to not over-process as this can result in an oily texture.
Then add the chocolate to the food processor and pulse a few times to coarsely chop and incorporate the chocolate.
Using your hands, form balls with the dough. If desired, roll in a decorative coating and enjoy!

This has been my favorite sweet recipe from you for years, I absolutely love making these, so easy and tasty! Also I sometimes change the nuts a little depending on what I have and it's always delicious, it's crazy how chocolate-like it taste when you know how little actual chocolate there is in it!! Thank you so much for sharing this awesome recipe, I used to make it for school snacks, and now I still happily eat them during work breaks ^^

Hi team Pick Up Limes! What a delicious treat. I don’t have a food processor, so instead of 1 cup of dates, I used 1/2 cup of date-syrup (which is very sweet) and 1/2 cup of tahini. It was easy (but a bit messy) and worked great! And instead of the recommended nuts I used 1,5 cup of mixed nuts. So good!

I am fructose intolerant so most of vegan dessert recipes are not for me.. is there anyway I can substitute the dates for something else?
PUL Team - Feb. 4, 2024, 10:38 p.m.
Hey Ella! You could experiment with substituting the dates in the recipe with another dried fruit such as dried apricots which are lower in fructose depending on your level of intolerance. Otherwise perhaps using a mix of syrup (such as fructose-free rice syrup) and nut butter may be fun to test out. Happy experimenting 🤗

However, when making it : my cacao powder went everywhere in my blender (and the other two bowls) and I had to clean them all. If you have any trick to avoid that, please let me know !

Had been a while since I have made a Pick Up Limes recipe, so I'm happy to come back, and it made me tell myself that I should make more 😌 Let's be clear, even though the remaining of my comment will be me complaining a bit, these were really tasty! I enjoyed this recipe but I had a "problem" texture-wise, but I guess it's a me problem... It was powdery so it was really tedious to make the balls. I wonder if it's because I didn't soak the dates – didn't because thought were soft enough – or if I didn't process enough, afraid from over-processing. I wish better luck next time🤞 However it was delicious 😋 😍
PUL Team - May 22, 2023, 6:28 a.m.
Hey Dora, thanks for sharing your experience with the recipe! If the mixture turns out too powdery, adding some extra moisture can do the trick. Soaking the dates helps by adding water and making them easier to blend into a smoother texture. Processing the mixture a bit longer also helps for a more cohesive consistency. And if nothing seems to work, try using wet hands to shape the balls😃

Thank you for your advice! I'll do this next time 😄

I have been making these balls for as long as I can remember. Over and over. A moment that I will never forget is this: my husband grew up in Mumbai and he ate this chocolate fudge all his life ( there is apparently a line that you would have to wait hours to get it). One fine day during Covid times, I made these fudge balls according your recipe and after taking one bite, he literally had tears in his eyes and told me that these balls legit brought his memory back and I will never forget this moment. I want to say THANK YOU for doing what you do.

Delicious! Great healthy snacks to have on hand and satisfy my serious chocolate sweet tooth. I also add coconut, vanilla, cinnamon, and a little maple syrup into my mixture and roll the balls in coconut. I highly recommend freezing these and eating them straight out of the freezer - they hold together better and feel a little less oily in frozen form. I typically make this in my Vitamix which makes for a nice smooth "batter," but I decided to test it with a double batch today which it couldn't handle all at once. My cheapy food processor did surprisingly well chopping up everything remaining in small batches, so will likely use that appliance in the future instead.

PUL Team - Oct. 16, 2022, 6:01 p.m.
Hey Deborah, yes we personally prefer Medjool dates as they're a bit bigger and chewier than more firm and smaller dates available to us. If substituting for Medjool dates, you may find it helpful to add a few more dates to the mixture if it's not as sticky. So glad the recipe was still enjoyed ✨

Sini - Oct. 15, 2022, 2:30 p.m.
Hey, I‘ve been loving your website and tried a bunch of great recipes already. For this one, I‘ve got some tips for folks without a food processor able to handle the sticky mixture:
Mine generally is able to handle nuts, so I first have it blend the nuts only until their somewhat powdery. Then I‘ll add the cocoa-powder, salt and a little protein powder (last ones not needed, just how I do it :)) and stir with a spoon. I take out most of the mixture at this point. I then use a knife to roughly chop the (for me soaked) dates, and slowly add them to my food processor, making sure every layer of dates gets well covered by the nut mixture I took out bevor (so I‘m adding that back in to make sure the dates dont stick as much). I omit the chocolate, but I‘m sure one could add it at this point too. I then blend everything together, until its sticky enough to be formed. If my mixture (due to the protein powder or to much nuts) isnt sticky enough, I add a teaspoon of peanut butter, and mix by hand.
The first time I‘ve tried this recipe, following the instructions more closly, it took me 2h to make this (and another to clean up), because the mixture was too sticky for my equipment. The second time, using the changed instructions, everything came together in 20mins. Thank you for the great recipe, it tasts really good and I love the balls for snacking when preparing a meal ;) Just the instructions needed a little altering for me.

Tastiest thing I have eaten in ages and took a total of 5 mins to make. I used pecans in place of cashews. It was slightly too crumbly, I probably could have done with an extra date. I also didn't really need the dark chocolate in it. I used a melon baller sized ice cream scoop to make little balls. I doubt they will last long as they are too tasty!
PUL Team - Oct. 12, 2022, 6:24 p.m.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with it, Ellie! Pecans have a slightly less creamy texture than cashews so an extra date sounds like a lovely idea. Enjoy 😃

These are really yummy and make a really great desk snack :) I rolled some of mine in chocolate shavings as well and it was really nice. One thing I noticed though is some batches turn a little oily and more difficult to shape. I make small batches of 10 my first batches were perfect. I was wondering if you might know what I'm doing wrong? Oily or not they are still very tasty! :)
PUL Team - May 16, 2022, 2:33 a.m.
Mmm sounds delicious, Emily, and that's a great question! Over-processing the mixture can cause the nuts to release some of their natural oils which will make the balls oily. Trying to stop blending when the mixture can be pressed into balls, such as a fudge-like consistency, but not overmixing afterwards will help avoid this 🙂

Very rich in flavor, and a perfect snack! -Caitlyn My 10 year old son made these, with my help. We had a great time together and enjoyed them very much! My little food processor, though, almost overheated, even though we soaked the dates first. Can you make these with oats and maple syrup instead of the dates?
PUL Team - April 22, 2022, 5:40 a.m.
Hi there, Daniela, Aiden, and Caitlyn! Thanks a bunch for taking the time to share your experience with the brownie bites. We're so glad they were enjoyed. A high-power food processor is encouraged to make sure the machine doesn't break. One alternative may be to mash the dates with a fork after they've soaked rather than blending. This will certainly be a bit more work though.
We haven't tested out oats with syrup but that sounds like a delicious idea too! If you experiment with it and the mixture isn't quite sticky enough you could add some nut butter or put them in the freezer to allow the bites to harden. We hope this helps for now, Daniela, Aiden, and Caitlyn, and thank you all for helping make our PUL community so incredible 😃

Thought it would be a bit too sweet because of the consistency and the amount of dates but it was just the perfect. Very delicate. I coated a few with both shredded coconut and cocoa powder and it was absolutely divine ! Will definitely prepare it again !

They are delicious, sticky and chocolatey. Our food processor isn't great, so I had to blitz the dates and nuts and then do the cocoa powder.

Hey Iris, thanks for sharing! We indeed recommend a high-power food processor if possible. Do let us know if you have any other feedback 🙂

Have you tried making them in a Vitamix? I own one, but not a food processor, and definitely want to give them a try!
PUL Team - Jan. 29, 2022, 7:48 p.m.
Hey Nicolas! We haven't personally, but given Vitamix blenders are generally powerful enough for nuts, we imagine it could work depending on the model! If you hear any weird sounds or smell anything unexpected, it likely would be best to stop blending though. We hope you enjoy the recipe if you're able to give it a try 🙂

These are amazing. I never leave reviews on anything but these bites definitely deserve a 5 star rating. I forgot to buy cashews so used almonds instead. I have been struggling with a sugar addiction, so being able to have my chocolate and sugar cravings satisfied with just one or two of these bites is helping me combat those voices calling for a midnight snack of junk food!

Hi! I was wondering if you can use pitted dates instead of Medjool dates? I read Medjool dates are much sweeter so I'm unsure if substituting will greatly affect the flavour.
Thank you for everything you do! Your recipes provide endless inspiration for me!
PUL Team - Jan. 12, 2022, 4:12 a.m.
Hey there, Hayley! Feel free to use whatever dates are the most accessible to you. We prefer pitted Medjool dates as they're generally a bit bigger and chewier than the more firm and smaller dates available to us. You may find it helpful to add a few more dates or some syrup to the mixture if it's not as sticky. It should be fine, but if more sweeteness if desired you could always add some sugar to taste too 😊

Can you please make nutrition info by 100 grams, not by a ball/bite?
PUL Team - Dec. 27, 2021, 10:51 p.m.
Hey there, Ana-Marija, thanks for the request! Our current website provides the nutrition information per defined portion size rather than grams, although it appears that each brownie bite without a coating is approximately 21 grams. This would be 4.76x the current nutrition information to translate it into 100 grams. We hope this helps for now 🙂

Thank you for this recipe! I finally got a food processor (we live in Belgium, I got the magimix that you work with!) and this is the first recipe I made with it. So exciting!! I had enough ingredients for a double portion. Our kids helped me make them, it was a great activity during quarantine (2 of our 3 kids are covid possible for the moment, symptom-free thankfully) and now we have a healthy treat in the fridge. They can't get over the fact that there's barely any sugar in them :) We had only walnuts (no cashews) and I didn't soak them, but I did toast them, and it all turned out great. I've been subscribed to your YouTube since years and LOVE your videos and recipes. All the best!

PUL Team - Aug. 17, 2021, 10:47 p.m.
Hey there, Tanushree, thanks for the question! The dates add natural sweetness while also helping with stickiness to keep the brownie bites together.
We can't say for certain as we haven't tested it out, but we'd recommend experimenting with another dried fruit, syrup or nut butter to use in place of the dates. Let us know how it goes if you give it a try 😃

Hello DK! You may find they squish easily, but little ones tend to enjoy them 😃 If your little one has an insulated lunch kit the refrigerated snacks should be fine. We tend to say refrigerated for extending the recipes freshness 😊
These were delicious! I made a few substitutions: I swapped the cocoa powder with vegan chocolate protein powder, and the raw cashews with raw almonds. The result was a chocolatey fudge goodness nonetheless! They are healthy but definitely don’t taste like it, which is just what I like haha. I’ll definitely be making these again.

This looks so good! I was wondering if you've tried a different combination of nuts? The reason I ask is that there is a nut allergy in our family specifically to walnuts and cashews. Would hazelnuts and almonds work? Or maybe pecans and Brazil nuts? I'm really looking forward to trying this (modified) recipe.

These are delicious. I have made these several times. Since the dates I use is hard, I soak them first. For the first two tries, the texture became very mushy. So I started to soak and then dry them. It helped with the texture. Also, the texture is better when taken out from fridge/freezer. Thank you for this recipe! And your new website is amazing. I love the recipe scaling feature.

I really liked the idea behind this recipe, and the ingredients were really easy to find! However for some reason the texture was really off? I made sure to use the right proportions and all but it seemed very moussey and liquid, not very fudge/brownie like. Do you know what went wrong? Lola
PUL Team - April 25, 2021, 1:22 a.m.
Hi Lola! It sounds like the mixture may have been overmixed a bit. When the initial mixture is just well enough blended, you can add in the chocolate until it's just coarsely chopped and then stop mixing again. This helps prevent the mixture from breaking down too much and the chocolate from melting which both make it more liquidy! Do let us know if this helps 😊

Low on the sweet side but perfect. Great texture
So good!
Simple and so yummy, should of doubled the recipe 😋
I've been making a version of these for ages. They are definitely a family favorite. You can also swap out the just with oats and almond meal. Also peppermint oil is a great addition. So delicious!
The best snack ever! I was low on cashews, so used sunflower seeds instead.
I'm looking for a sweet snack. Loved your recipes ever since the Vegan Yakisoba (my new go-to), and now I want a sweet snack. A lot of these have nuts, and I have a nut allergy. Can you make more delicious recipes that aren't so nut based?
Didn't have walnuts so I used almonds instead. They are amazing😍
Coated it with crunchy almond pieces.
Thanks for the amazing recipe!
This delicious snack helps me during my sweet pregnancy cravings <3 If you find your mixture to be to dry. It helps to blend it a little longer so the oil can escape from the nuts! After that I had no problem forming the balls.
I can’t get over with this easy snack having it for months, my family very fond of this. Thank you PICK UP LIMES❤️…….so excited to try all of your other recipes.
Yum yum yum yum yum!
I’m a nursing student and these are what I live for!! They are so easy to make during study breaks. They taste like dessert but I’m so happy they’re not. On the hard days I don’t have to feel guilty for indulging in 3 or 4 of them. These curb my chocolate cravings, keep me energized, and happy😊 Thank you PUL!!🥰
I am fructose intolerant so most of vegan dessert recipes are not for me.. is there anyway I can substitute the dates for something else?
I make a single serve post meal dessert version of this recipe with some alterations most nights. I use my mortar and pestle to quickly bring everything together rather than a blender so there is no cleaning as well ;)
I've now made these for my colleagues, parents and in-laws and let me tell you, everyone is a fan! My colleague basically steals these from my lunch box now 😋😋😋
These taste so much like brownies I’m in danger of eating them all in one sitting. They were easy and fast to make, too. Wow…
I made this today and it was delicious and calmed that awful chocolate craving I always get. The best thing it that I do not feel miserable after eating it! Thank you! I am going to make these again.
I like dipping these in yogurt mmmm. Sorry, I know my greediness it out of control!
Loved these so much! I saved some of the mix as a crumb, melted some vegan choc chips with a hint of coconut oil, dipped the balls into the melted choc and the crumb. So good!
So easy and delicious!!! Ate it by the spoonful as soon as it was done!
They taste amazing and so easy to make
They were delicious . If you could make other sweet recipes without too much sugar that would be great thank you

Too delicious !
I exchanged the walnuts by almonds, but then had more cashew (and less almonds). It is fab !
However, when making it : my cacao powder went everywhere in my blender (and the other two bowls) and I had to clean them all. If you have any trick to avoid that, please let me know !

Super easy and super tasty 😋. Thank you so much!
These are perfectly delicious little treats!
Love the recipe."
I add shredded coconut to mine. So good and easy to make!
Amazing! I had neither walnuts nor cashews, so I used raw unsalted peanuts and almonds and added one tbsp of homemade almond butter. I believe the result to be a thicker texture, but the taste is incredible. I didn't add the coconut. We ate them as is or with fresh unsweetened Raspberries or grapefruit. Thank you so much for this delicious treat.
Made these tonight exactly how the recipe was written…WOW! So tasty and so easy…thank you! ❤️
What a wonderful, quick and easy dessert! Just the right size after dinner or to take to a gathering!
Absolutely love this recipe and I come back to it again and again! I've recently made these for all my family and my partner and they all loved them. I can't think of an easier tastier snack involving such few ingredients. 😍😍
Quick, easy and tasty. I think this is the first recipe I made from Pick Up Limes and I have not stopped since. Highly recommend this one!
I love this recipe! I make it all the time. The brownie bites stay soft when frozen so I keep them in my freezer and eat them straight out of there.
Simple, easy and looks divine
This is my number one go to snack of all times! I have been making it for years and I never get tired of it. Perfect to have in the fridge, when you want a healthy snack-option<3
These are so Delicious
I want to thank you for sharing this delicious recipe! I'm able to make this easily in my food processor. We stopped buying packed snacks and make these brownie balls every weekend for over a year now. Absolutely delicious! I don't think we'll ever get bored :) :)
The texture wasn't like in the video. Probably because i used dates (no medjool), but the taste was so good! Definitely making it again with medjool dates.
Hey,
I‘ve been loving your website and tried a bunch of great recipes already.
Thank you for the great recipe, it tasts really good and I love the balls for snacking when preparing a meal ;)
Just the instructions needed a little altering for me.
Literally the most healthy and tasty desert I have made in a while!!! I made it for my siblings, and they liked it so much that they finished eating all the 20 bites in just 1 day and they keep asking me to batch make these for every week!Thank you so much pick up limes!💗
Are we supposed to soak the nuts ?
Such an amazing recipe ! I used a mix of sunflower and pumpkin seeds instead of Cashews. And i covered them with melted dark chocolate and it was absolutely divine. I love chocolatey treats as a snack and i love that i can take this to go with me so I'll avoid eating out out of convenience
Its my go to recipe now. Its so delicious!!
I made them and they're delicious! I used almonds rather than cashews and they're amazing! I love the fact that I can get the recipe based on the amount of ingredients I have in my pantry. I love this website and all of your videos :-)
These energy balls are one of my Favoriten on the go snack, because its so simple and not many ingredients. My friends always ask me to make them. So Yeah, its a pretty good, whole some and tasty snack😍
Dear Sadia & Robin, I make this recipe at least every two months or for friends as a gift. The first time I tried it, I was amazed with the simplicity and tastiness. That's why I decided to give it to my mother to try. And now she makes it every time she climbs bigger mountains with her friends (btw. she is 55). This recipe is amazing - simple and incredibly delicious. Thank you so much for your work and creativity. I appreciate it very much.
This is such a fun dessert or snack to make with the kids. They love it and it really is easy. We love them rolled in coconut flakes best. Thank you for this recipe; it is a part of our family fun :-)
So yummy and sweet
I’m making them for my 39 weeks being pregnant because the jewel dates are also highly recommended to soften the cervix
So this will be a great way to incorporate dates into my diet in a not so boring way ;)
They were good in the first batch we forgot the dark chocolate but even with no dark chocolate it still tasted good really good recipe -Aiden
Delicious! Very rich in flavor, and a perfect snack! -Caitlyn
My 10 year old son made these, with my help. We had a great time together and enjoyed them very much! My little food processor, though, almost overheated, even though we soaked the dates first. Can you make these with oats and maple syrup instead of the dates?
Thought it would be a bit too sweet because of the consistency and the amount of dates but it was just the perfect. Very delicate. I coated a few with both shredded coconut and cocoa powder and it was absolutely divine ! Will definitely prepare it again !
These are so good. I'm on my second batch and I store the in the freezer, and they are delicious after being defrosted too. When rolled in cacao powder they taste like truffles.
Awesome!!!
They are delicious, sticky and chocolatey. Our food processor isn't great, so I had to blitz the dates and nuts and then do the cocoa powder.
Theses recipes are really super easy and that has changed my life drastically. I can indulge on my cravings with healthy alternatives and won’t feel guilty.
I made these for my mom for mother’s day last year. They were really easy to make and she loved them.
Thanks for the great recipe.
These are so incredibly delicious! I can't believe how easy they are to make. I am now obsessed and will be asking everyone to try them. Thank you for the recipe PUL!
Have you tried making them in a Vitamix? I own one, but not a food processor, and definitely want to give them a try!
Can you please make nutrition info by 100 grams, not by a ball/bite?
I've made these many times since I first tried them out. They always turn out delicious! We usually make a double batch to be able to keep some in the freezer. The adults and kids (ages 5 and 2) in our family love them. Thanks for a great recipe!
These are so good. The perfect little sweet taste with a cup of tea. A hit with the kids. First batch disappeared so have had to make a second batch which is always the sign of a great recipe.
They can't get over the fact that there's barely any sugar in them :)
We had only walnuts (no cashews) and I didn't soak them, but I did toast them, and it all turned out great. I've been subscribed to your YouTube since years and LOVE your videos and recipes. All the best!
Hi Sadia! I wanted to make these with some friends but they’re allergic to cashews. Would it be possible to sub them for another nut like almonds or pecans? Thanks!
Hi Sadia, can I add protein powder in these?
I love all your recipes and this one was quick and easy!!! Delicious!! Made it with my mom I am 7.
Very delicious! I put some tahini in, its 😋
Love these! Thank you for this recipe. I have made them several times already. This week my boyfriend took a whole batch to his family, who also loved them.
quick question : could i possibly swap out the mejool dates for peanut butter? i am not a huge fan of the flavor of dates D:
Hey Sadia,
Will these be a good idea to send in my kids lunchbox? Or just good to enjoy at home. I am looking to make snacks for his box and would really really appreciate suggestions; esp since the few I checked out in your all suggest refrigerator...thank you.
P.S love love love your blog and have tried many recipes. Will be adding reviews in the days to come
These were delicious!
I've made this recipe several times, occasionally subbing the walnuts for almonds depending on what I have in my cupboard. Delicious and fudgy, these are a go-to for me. I would definitely recommend.
I've made these multiple times now! Love 'em! So easy, so yummy and healthy!
My boyfriend, who does not really like dates, loves these too. <3
So easy to make and incredibly delicious!
So good! These are my go to, to satisfy that chocolate cravings.
Love them! My boyfriend and friends love them too! I followed the recipe, maybe 1-2 dates less, and they turned out perfect! I wanted to freeze some, but didn’t get the chance to :)) I also like that they are really quick and easy to do (I am usually slow when cooking.. :) )
Love these as a dessert, snack or a little energy boost on the trails! Always make these when going camping! Love the portability of them! I also love pulsing in some cacao nibs at the end to give them a little crunch! Just another great way to mix up and already delicious snack! Also, rolling in coconut is highly recommended!
I always have a batch of these in the freezer and when I feel like having something sweet I have one of them (sometimes even two!). Just remember to make the balls as soon as the mixture is ready. I once left it on the counter for a few hours and the oils from the nuts separated from the mixture. Totally recommend!!!
Amazing taste and easy healthy recipe 🤩 love it!
These ones are a must! The texture is great and the flavour is just unreal!! My favorite ones are the ones with cocoa powder so yummy
Another great recipe that keeps in the fridge forever and is always there to satisfy the sweet tooth!
I made these for Mother’s Day and they were delicious! My mom loved them! Thank you so much for this great recipe. :)
Made these brownie bites they are delicious will difently do them again and my daughter loves them. Thank you for the recipe.
Gave this recipe a try, it is amazing, the taste and the texture, all of it <3 Definitely a recipe to go with for substituting chocolate sweets.
Gonna grab them for today's hike, thank you so much for the recipe! You make vegan so delicious and fun!
I really liked the idea behind this recipe, and the ingredients were really easy to find! However for some reason the texture was really off? I made sure to use the right proportions and all but it seemed very moussey and liquid, not very fudge/brownie like. Do you know what went wrong?
Lola
I love these chocolate bites!!
Such a wonderful complement to fruits during fika!!!! I completely agree that they’re more tasty when taken out from the freezer, especially the texture.
