Directions

  1. To a saucepan, add the oats, milk, cinnamon, pumpkin spice, and one of the bananas*. Cook at a gentle simmer for 5 minutes, stirring often.
  2. Add the other banana and the flaxseeds, cooking for 3 - 5 minute longers. Add more milk for a thinner consistency, or cook for a few more minutes for a thicker porridge.
  3. Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the vanilla, plate, add desired toppings, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Nutrition tip: aim to use plant-based milk that is fortified with calcium.
  • * The banana will start to partially dissolve as it cooks, which naturally sweetens the oatmeal.

Storage

  • Store the oatmeal, without toppings, in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.

Yum!

Emina - Dec. 9, 2024, 8:49 a.m.

So easy to make

Emily - Nov. 19, 2024, 6:11 p.m.

This is so good and on my regular rotation as well. So great on a slow winter morning 🙂

Amy Q - Oct. 13, 2024, 3:13 p.m.

Seems to be a hit with picky toddlers, mine included! I feel great making this for our breakfast, knowing we’re starting the day off right with a wholesome and delicious meal.

fruiteend - Oct. 2, 2024, 11:15 p.m.

This is my go-to breakfast!
I usually also add some soy or coconut yogurt for some extra creaminess :)
For the berries, I like to make the "jam" from the PUL-recipes (the one with chia seeds), so they're a bit quicker to add and a bit less sour (in my opinion)

PUL small logo PUL Team - Oct. 3, 2024, 6:58 p.m.

Yay so glad that you're enjoying the oatmeal recipe, fruiteend, it's one of our favourite breakfasts 🫶

Kris - Sept. 29, 2024, 9:52 a.m.

Simple and tasty. I loved the crunch from the flaxseeds. Also a hit with my 3 year old

Jasmine Martinez - Sept. 9, 2024, 8:43 p.m.

So simple yet so comforting and delicious. The smell warmed my heart.

JJ.bubble - Aug. 16, 2024, 9:41 a.m.

It’s been my favorite oatmeal for at least 6 years ☺️ I cook it on a low heat and the slow cooking gives it a very sweet taste ☺️

PUL small logo PUL Team - Aug. 16, 2024, 2:08 p.m.

Wow how special that you've been enjoying the oatmeal recipe for so long, friend! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience with it 🥰

Kira - Aug. 7, 2024, 8:51 a.m.

The oatmal itself was nice, but the stewed berries were very bitter. I need to try it again with different toppings/ fresh berries.

Justice G - Sept. 4, 2024, 3:54 p.m.

I made my stewed Berries with a drizzle of agave, I hope that helps with the bitterness for you! We also top our bowls off with a pinch of salt to really bring out all the flavors.

Jack Malone - July 9, 2024, 6:51 a.m.

This is my absolute favorite! I was wondering about soaking. Should I soak the oats and/or any of the seeds overnight? I want to get as much protein out of this as possible!

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 10, 2024, 7:22 p.m.

Hey Jack! We usually don't soak rolled oats or seeds if we're roasting or cooking them, as in this recipe. We do soak seeds if we're snacking on them raw, and we soak thicker oats like steel-cut oats more often though. Feel free to soak them if you prefer in this recipe - just remember that the oats will absorb some of the liquid, so you'll need less overall when cooking. You can learn more in our soaking article here: https://www.pickuplimes.com/a… 🤗

Emily - May 10, 2024, 11:16 p.m.

Delicious! I made it with almond milk as I didn’t have soy and topped with sliced banana, peanut butter and pumpkin seeds as suggested. Perfect warming brekkie for the colder months.

Lukster - April 30, 2024, 5:19 p.m.

One of the best oatmeal recipes I've tried. Easy to make, very filling, and guilt-free tasting. My go to for weekdays.

Just a perfect, yummy and easy recipe🥰

Sheliah - June 27, 2023, 6:37 p.m.

This is truly a comforting, warm bowl of creamy nourishing goodness! When my grandson began eating solids this was the first bowl of oatmeal he had and at 2 1/2 years old he still asks for this “oomaah” almost every morning.

So happy to hear, Kerstin!

Zoe - April 11, 2023, 2:33 a.m.

I’m not a big fan of cooking in general and I also don’t normally like eating oats but decided to try this anyway. It was super easy to make and sooo yummy, the mixture of the banana, berries and nut butter was really good! I’m definitely going to make this again!

Thank you!!!

PUL small logo PUL Team - April 11, 2023, 7:57 a.m.

Awe it means so much, Zoe, thank you!

Kashvi - March 25, 2023, 3:19 p.m.

Hey Sadia,
Absolutely love your videos and recipes ! Especially love all your oatmeal and granola recipes - it’s our family favourite !
I had a question - there is so much contradicting information out there about soy milk and I see you using soy milk a lot for most breakfast recipes and I know it would be a great source of protein, but my family always advises me against it cause of the issues related to it !
Could you please enlighten me more about it and share more information on soy milk as to what’s right ?
Thanks in advance
Love,
Kashvi

PUL small logo PUL Team - March 26, 2023, 8:55 p.m.

Hey Kashvi, thanks for the question. It's so confusing with all of the information out there! We tend to gravitate towards soy milk since it offers more protein than other plant-based milks. There is controversy, but soy is safe when consumed in moderation. We'd recommend checking out our article on soy (pickuplimes.com/article/soy-28) for more information on the topic if you haven't already seen it and are interested 🙂

Paula C. - Feb. 16, 2023, 9:09 p.m.

Hearty, healthy and satisfying, this is one of our favourites and we make it often. The berry topping really elevates and is super quick, love the rich bananas flavour cooked right in.

Kirsten - Feb. 10, 2023, 3:25 a.m.

this recipe completely changed my relationship to oatmeal. cooking the banana with the oats is a game changer!

Zoe - Feb. 5, 2023, 9:01 p.m.

I grew up eating microwavable oatmeal and I’ve never made stovetop oatmeal before this recipe. The banana in the pot is a game changer! It’s such a delicious morning treat that satisfies my energy needs and my sweet tooth.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Feb. 5, 2023, 11:44 p.m.

Yess the banana is a game-changer! So glad the oatmeal is being enjoyed, Zoe 😃

Chaima - Nov. 13, 2022, 12:24 p.m.

For some reasons, I always fail to make a nice tasty porridge, so I completely gave up making them, however when I found this recipe yesterday it looked so nice and I wanted to try it. The result was amazing as I was able to make a very yummy, looking nice porridge.
Thank you for sharing your recipes !

PUL small logo PUL Team - Nov. 13, 2022, 4:30 p.m.

Oh, Chaima, it means so much to hear! We're so happy the oatmeal was enjoyed 🤗

Elaine - Oct. 19, 2022, 8:11 p.m.

This is the first recipe I've made from your website. It's delicious! I soaked the oats in the soy milk for 5 minutes before cooking because I like the texture better. I added chia seeds to soak with it because I wasn't sure but thought it would help with absorption. I love watching your You Tube channel !

PUL small logo PUL Team - Oct. 19, 2022, 11:26 p.m.

Aww it means so much, Elaine, we're so glad your first PUL recipe was enjoyed 🤗

Sheri - Sept. 25, 2022, 3:36 p.m.

We love the recipe!

But I would advise others to hold off on adding the flax seed if you enjoy the traditional texture of oatmeal. We found that the flax made it all stick together in one big glob.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Sept. 25, 2022, 5:38 p.m.

Hi Sheri, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with it. In case it helps, we find that stirring the oatmeal often and adding more milk can give the oatmeal a thinner texture 😃

Anna-Lena - Sept. 4, 2022, 6:08 p.m.

Delicious, wholesome recipe. Love it and we eat it so many times a week. X

Bard - July 10, 2022, 4:22 p.m.

I was almost giving up on oatmeal when I found this AMAZING recipe omg. It’s so simple yet flavorful and comforting.
I’ve made it two times now. The first one it was perfect but the second time the bananas kinda dried out while cooking and ended in an unpleasent consistency. The first time the bananas were very brown, the second time they were more yellow (but not unripe and tasted normal before being added), do you think they dried out because they weren’t ripe enough?

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 10, 2022, 9:30 p.m.

Hey Bard, thanks for the question! The oatmeal indeed may be a bit dry if the bananas used weren't ripe enough or if they were on the smaller side. Adding more plant milk can help if you find the consistency is too dry 🙂

Bard - July 10, 2022, 11:28 p.m.

Okay, thanks for the quick reply!

Isabell - June 19, 2022, 7:52 a.m.

Hey love this outmeal so much … no I love ALL of your recipes so much 💚
Just one question: 1 cup soy milk is never 240ml, did I get something wrong or are my cups wrong? I am so confused haha

PUL small logo PUL Team - June 22, 2022, 3:11 p.m.

Aw it means so much, Isabell! Do you happen to mean in general or in this recipe in particular? Cups to millilitres is a standard measure of volume with 1 cup of soy milk weighing around 244 grams per the US Food Database (https://fdc.nal.usda.gov/fdc-…) 🙂

Nesina - June 10, 2022, 10:22 p.m.

If you need to be converted to loving oatmeal-- this is the recipe!! I was wanting something hearty to make my twin toddlers for breakfast. This recipe is warm, cozy, filling, and all the other good things. It also holds up really well to being re-heated. I used chia seeds instead of flax seeds based on what I had in the pantry and found it worked well.

Also my compliments on your website! The portion adjustment feature is really handy.

PUL small logo PUL Team - June 13, 2022, 4:08 p.m.

Oh we're so happy to hear the oatmeal was enjoyed, Nesina, it means so much! So glad the website features are helpful too 🥰

Erica - June 9, 2022, 7:46 p.m.

We'e so honoured to hear, Erica, thank you!

Carolina - May 11, 2022, 10:31 a.m.

This is truly the most comforting, filling and delicious oatmeal recipe I've ever had the pleasure of trying! I usually don't write any reviews but with this recipe I really felt like I had to. I added some fresh strawberries, kiwi, chopped almonds, pomegranate seeds and some chopped mint. Very refreshing!

PUL small logo PUL Team - May 11, 2022, 5:06 p.m.

Such a massive compliment, Carolina, thank you so much for taking the time to share! Love the additions too 😍

Susannah - April 16, 2022, 5:16 p.m.

Delicious!! I make this recipe weekly.

Jillian - April 11, 2022, 2:01 p.m.

I've watched the video this recipe was featured in many times, and decided this morning I should make myself this oatmeal. It is hands-down the best oatmeal I've ever had! I cut the recipe quantities in half for one serving, but I followed everything else. Something about the soy milk and the banana cooking in the oatmeal, just incredible. Thank you Sadia for creating wholesome and tasty recipes that really work and make us feel great :)

PUL small logo PUL Team - April 11, 2022, 2:58 p.m.

Aw thank you for the glowing review, Jillian, it means so much!

Make this immediately! Delicious!

Judy - Dec. 8, 2021, 7:40 p.m.

Just made this for breakfast for my partner and I, delicious! We were out of bananas, so I added a bit of maple syrup instead. Made with oatmilk, and topped with stewed blueberries, chopped toasted almonds, and hemps seeds. :) Thank you for sharing your recipe, great way to start the day!

PUL small logo PUL Team - Dec. 9, 2021, 1:40 a.m.

Mmm sounds so lovely, Judy! Thanks for taking the time to share the kind words and insight 🌻

Adam - Nov. 3, 2021, 12:52 a.m.

Thanks for this. Great recipe! My girlfriend is allergic to bananas. Is there anything you would recommend to replace that or simply just leave it out?

PUL small logo PUL Team - Nov. 4, 2021, 3:38 p.m.

Hi Adam, thanks for the question. The banana helps add a creamier texture and sweetness to the oatmeal. You could omit it and for less creamy and sweet oatmeal, although we'd recommend adding some more sweetness if desired. For example, adding syrup, applesauce, more fruit (such as berries), or coconut flakes to taste. Alternatively, you could experiment with substituting the banana for a sweet and starchy replacement, such as mashed sweet potatoes 😊 We hope this helps for now!

Victoria - Nov. 2, 2021, 2:01 p.m.

I've always wanted to like oatmeal, but just couldn't get on board with it. I've tried a lot of variations. But this! This is it! Finally! Soooooooooooooooooo delicious! Thank you! You've just changed my eating life entirely!

Joey - Nov. 1, 2021, 2:46 a.m.

Sooooo scrumptious!!! I’m a breakfast Oats kind of Girl and this is soooo good!!! 🙏 Thank you xxoo

Rachel - Oct. 14, 2021, 11:19 a.m.

This oatmeal is so delicious 😍😍😍 I just made it for the second time, and I topped it with some homemade applesauce and used yellow plums instead of bananas (that's what I had on hand, but I usually love oatmeal with banana). It has so much flavor and makes eating something simple like oatmeal so much more exciting! Thanks so much!!

PUL small logo PUL Team - Oct. 15, 2021, 1:14 a.m.

We appreciate this so much, Rachel, thank you for taking the time to share! Lovely toppings as well 😍

Sawyer - Oct. 10, 2021, 2:06 a.m.

This has become my go-to breakfast almost every day of the week. Such an outstanding combination of flavors from such a simple list of ingredients. And it is healthy to boot!

PUL small logo PUL Team - Oct. 10, 2021, 3:42 a.m.

So happy to hear, Sawyer, thank you!

angie - Sept. 18, 2021, 12:16 p.m.

this became a self-care routine for me, love it so much! After eating only pre-made oatmeals, I tried this one and a week after I can say that I have not skipped a morning! thank you for the recipe and also the website makes cooking sooo much easier!

PUL small logo PUL Team - Sept. 18, 2021, 8:39 p.m.

Aw sounds so lovely! Glad you're enjoying the oatmeal, Angie 🙂

elinor - Sept. 15, 2021, 8:51 p.m.

can i use whole grain flaxseed instead of ground?

PUL small logo PUL Team - Sept. 16, 2021, 4:40 a.m.

Hi Elinor! That's a great question. The ground flaxseeds are a bit easier to digest and help absorb a bit of the liquid. You could use whole flaxseeds if desired though and cook to the desired consistency. We hope you enjoy the oatmeal 😊

Paula from Canada - Aug. 30, 2021, 7:34 p.m.

Delicious, comforting and wholesome! Thank you for the recipe, I will be adding it to my morning routine.

Taylor - Aug. 26, 2021, 6:54 p.m.

Stewed berries and nut butter have completely revolutionized my oatmeal game! Historically, I've not been a fan of oatmeal, but they way you guys mix it up it is so incredibly good! I look forward to eating this recipe! And it's GOOD FOR ME! haha!

PUL small logo PUL Team - Aug. 28, 2021, 7:10 p.m.

We appreciate this so much, Taylor, so thrilled you enjoyed the oatmeal 😃

Shivani - Aug. 24, 2021, 11:02 a.m.

This is just sooo creamy, dreamy and perfect. Thank you sooo much for this recipe ❤️❤️❤️

Brian - Aug. 19, 2021, 12:55 p.m.

SUPERB!!!!! The banana really gives the oatmeal something extra and topping it with stewed berries and, in my case peanut butter, completed it for me. I was surprised by how creamy it turned out and i loved every single bite! Who knew a healthy breakfast could be so easy and fun to make.

Anushka - Aug. 18, 2021, 10:46 a.m.

Hi! I love your recipes, but I have a question. How long should I cook old fashioned rolled oats for? I usually cook them for about 20-25 minutes.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Aug. 19, 2021, 10:46 p.m.

Hey Anushka, thanks for the lovely question! Our old-fashioned rolled oats tend to cook in around 5 minutes, although you could do more or less based on your preferences. Are you using steel-cut oats by any chance? If not, increasing the temperature may help the oats cook faster if desired 😊

Sherry Hodgson - Aug. 12, 2021, 6:41 p.m.

I have made this recipe several times now and just love it. I'm not a true vegan but find that I'm making many of these recipes over and over again. Thank you for your attention to detail and I love the idea that I can make just one portion and don't have to mess with figuring out the measurements because the system does it for you. I also like the idea of being able to check off the ingredients and steps to the recipe, so I know exactly where I am in the process. And the fact that I can substitute certain ingredients if I don't have the one called for in the recipe. I've told all my senior friends as well as all my adult children about your website so that they can all have healthier meals. It goes without saying that seniors often don't have good nutrition when cooking for themselves and most recipes are written with several people in mind so it takes time to figure out the measurements for one or two people. That's why I appreciate the way you designed your website to figure out the portion sizes.
Yes, I love these recipes. Thank you.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Aug. 13, 2021, 2:04 a.m.

Oh, Sherry, we're so grateful to have you here and are thrilled you're enjoying the new website! Thank YOU. It means so much ✨💚

Alex H - Aug. 9, 2021, 6:57 p.m.

Okay I had to leave a comment because I've bought rolled oats many times with the hope of making something delicious. This is the first time I made oatmeal that was ACTUALLY delicious. I can't believe how tasty this is <3

PUL small logo PUL Team - Aug. 10, 2021, 3:48 a.m.

Aw we appreciate this so much, Alex! So thrilled you enjoyed the oatmeal :D

Sragdhara Ghosh - Aug. 6, 2021, 5:49 p.m.

Amazing! I usually do some form of overnight oatmeal because I found cooked oats to look and taste like cement, but I tried this recipe this morning and it was so good! I will certainly be making this any morning I have time to cook (and topping it with Pick Up Lime's superseed peanut butter, because it was the perfect combination).

PUL small logo PUL Team - Aug. 5, 2021, 10:08 p.m.

So happy to hear, Cara! Love superseed topping idea 😍

Cam - Aug. 3, 2021, 9:16 p.m.

Really good! I really enjoyed the taste of the cooked bananas.

Love this bowl of oatmeal. It’s my breakfast for lunch on a rainy day. ♥️🌧🥣

Erdem - Aug. 1, 2021, 10:18 a.m.

I did it for 1 serving. It was so filling that I had a hard time finishing it. Although normally my portions are quite large.

Djurdjica Despotovic - July 31, 2021, 9:34 p.m.

From the moment I found this recipe, about two years ago, this is the only way I make oatmeal now. Thank you for this lovely recipe, I don't even know how I ate my oats before this! xoxo

Rae - July 31, 2021, 3:05 a.m.

Anjali - July 29, 2021, 7:36 p.m.

YUM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would there be a way to make your recipes print out on a single page? I removed the picture and it is still 2 pages.

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 29, 2021, 11:37 p.m.

Thanks a bunch, Anjali! Decreasing the font size by pressing the green "-" button at the top of the print preview page can make the printout one page long. Kindly email us at info@pickuplimes.com for further assistance if needed☺️

Magda - July 28, 2021, 8:54 p.m.

OK, let me stop here for a minute. This oatmeal recipe is everything. And I'm not exaggerating. Before this recipe I was never into oatmeal. Now it is my go to breakfast from Monday to Friday for the past 2 years (even a little bit over 2 years) and it will stay much longer, I'm sure! Sometimes I changed the toppings for more summery vibes like mango and kiwi, but it's still the best. Thank you for sharing this on YT^^ <3

Love this recipe! The bananas cooked in and the stewed berries on top are SO delicious. Best oatmeal I've had, and it's fun to do variations.

Cris S - June 5, 2021, 5:18 p.m.

This recipe was my first ever oatmeal and I enjoyed it greatly! I especially loved the fact that it lasted me in the fridge for four days (I omitted the stewed fruit and added fresh fruit every morning instead)!

PUL small logo PUL Team - June 5, 2021, 11:35 p.m.

Oo so glad your first oatmeal experience was a success, Cris! Adding fresh fruit is a lovely idea 😊

Anna - May 18, 2021, 9:46 a.m.

Hi, I have a question about a thing I've been trying out when it comes to my oatmeal. I would say I slowly perfected the recipe more and more and recently I had an idea how to incorporate even more healthy ingredients into it. I like my oatmeal really creamy and smooth so I tried using a blender to create dust-like mix of various seeds. I added this powder into the cooking oats and it turned out to be really good! So my question is - does the fact that the seeds are turned into the smallest possible pieces change anything about the nutritional value? I guess it should be easier to digest, but do you think it brings the same benefits as whole seeds/nuts? And also, would you suggest keeping this ground seed (I might also try adding nuts in the next batch) mix in the fridge? Thank you so much! Love you, Anna.

PUL small logo PUL Team - May 22, 2021, 11:56 p.m.

Hi Anna, so awesome that's you've been experimenting with oatmeal recipes! Both ground and whole nuts and seeds are wholesome choices. You're correct that ground seeds may be easier to digest. Nutrition-wise, it would depend a bit on what seeds you're using. For example, grinding flax seeds helps to release their oils for an increased nutritional benefit of omega-3 fatty acids in particular compared to whole flax seeds.

For storing ground nuts and seeds, we'd suggest keeping the amount needed for a short while on hand in the pantry or fridge. Storing the rest in the freezer may help prevent them from going rancid if you're preparing them in bulk 😊
