Frequently asked questions
How do you prevent lumps in homemade gravy?
Whisking the flour mixture while slowly adding the liquid will really help to prevent lumps. If you notice lumps forming, stop adding the liquid and vigorously whisk the mixture to try and smooth it out before adding more. If you notice the lumps after adding all the ingredients, you can blend the mixture and strain it.
How do you make gravy vegan?
Making a gravy recipe without dairy involves a few big flavour-makers: caramelized onions, aromatic garlic, rich vegan butter, good quality vegetable stock, a slight cheesy-ness from nutritional yeast, and umami-richness from miso paste and soy sauce.
How do you make vegan gravy without gluten?
To make this gravy recipe gluten free, the flour in this recipe can be swapped for cornstarch, but cornstarch needs a different water ratio, compared to flour. Generally, we find 1 Tbsp of cornstarch per 1 cup of water makes a nice pourable consistency. For the original unscaled sauce, we suggest dissolving 2 Tbsp of cornstarch in a bit of water before adding it along with all the other ingredients in step 4. You will only add garlic in step 2 and skip step 3 altogether! If you give the version with no flour a try, we’d love to hear your reviews!
What do you serve with vegan gravy?
We love serving it with mashed potatoes, but it’s also amazing on roasted veggies, stuffing, or even a veggie loaf. It’s that perfect touch that makes everything feel cozy and comforting. Honestly, it’s an easy holiday sauce for any dish that could use a little savoury goodness - whether it’s a Thanksgiving feast, Christmas dinner, or a simple weeknight meal.
