Scallion pancakes, 葱油饼 or cōngyóubǐng, are a staple Chinese snack or dim sum dish. The super thin dough is filled with aromatic sesame oil and loaded with green onions. It's pan-fried for a crunchy exterior and chewy, layered middle.

🌟 RECIPE UPDATE: To improve this recipe, we introduced toasted sesame oil and more salt into the dough. This makes the dough a bit more pliable and flavourful. We have also added a cooking tip for thicker pancakes. We hope you enjoy this updated version! 💛 xo, Sadia (25 Oct 2024)

More time consuming of a recipe than I expected. I subbed a 6-grain flour blend and not sure it worked because it required a lot of extra dusting when rolling out. The restaurant ones we get are thicker and more doughy in the middle so I will try that next time.

Hey Kat, thanks for sharing your experience with the pancakes. We'd indeed recommend sticking with all-purpose flour for the best texture and cooking experience 😊

Finally a recepie where I can get rid of my left over green onions! It was fun to make but I see this as a good basic recepie. Flavour wise I would use a garlic or chili oil in the pancake next time. Or serve it with a good chutney. But that is all flavour preference ;)

Thanks for sharing your experience with it, Fam 😊

These were yummy! I noticed that the pancakes with more sesame oil were tastier and not as chewy. However, these took too long and not easy to make. Also took longer to cook as I could not rolled them as thin as I would have liked.

Really wanted to love this recipe like I do the others. Thought this was going to be a nice easy recipe - pancakes with scallions in it, what can go wrong. In reality I found this to be way too much faffery and messy. Taste was OK but nothing like the other amazing recipes on here :(

We're sad to hear the recipe didn't meet your expectations, Marika! We enjoyed these pancakes with the recommended dipping sauces but we'll keep this feedback in mind to help us improve future recipes 🙂

This is definitely a dish I would suggest cooking with one or more person as an activity. It was fun to be in the kitchen together making these green onion dough balls. And the five spice - an extra bit of delight in taste and smell! Highly recommend it with some sort of dipping sauce. We had a sweet and spicy sauce and a jalapeno green onion soy sauce/chutney.

This was yummy, (I didn’t have the five spice powder so I omitted that). I made a quick dipping sauce on the side where I combined soy sauce, rice wine vinegar and sesame oil. Happy I made this!

Woohoo! So happy to hear, Nikki, thank you 😊
