Onigiri is commonly shaped into triangles, but for simplicity, we opted for ball-shaped onigiri. This shape is not only easier to form but also allows for a thorough coating in furikake instead of traditional nori, helping to keep the rice moist if prepared ahead of time. Filled with a flavourful mix of tofu and shiitake, these onigiri make the perfect grab-and-go snack or a satisfying lunch when you have a couple.

Onigiri is something I frequently make with leftover rice. It always makes me giggle to see people who shape them like actual balls (round) instead of their actual shape (triangle). Not a critique of your presentation choices, I just find it funny.

** I shouldn't have said "actual shape", I should have said "usual shape" or "common shape", seeing as onigiri do sometimes come in other shapes. The triangle shape is just most commonly used and associated with onigiri.

Thanks for the thoughtful insight, Sage! I have such find memories of eating the classic triangular-shaped onigiri while Robin and I were travelling through Japan - so yummy! In case it helps, we often share the background and reasons behind certain recipe choices in the "Info" tab, like why we went with a ball shape here. I hope you love this recipe if you give it a try ๐Ÿ’›

I will definitely try this.
Just one question - I thought furikake contains dried crumbled fish. Is this vegan version or I had a wrong idea about it?

Hey Marijana! Indeed, many traditional furikake blends do contain dried fish, but not all of them! Just check the label to ensure itโ€™s free from fish, bonito flakes, or shrimp... but for what it's worth, we're posting our own homemade furikake seasoning in the app tomorrow, so stay tuned for that if you're interested in making it yourself at home! ๐Ÿซถ

There are vegan version which just dont include dried fish or use a substitute vegan friendly item to still provide the flavour and texture. But if the container doesn't specifically say it is vegan, it is using fish. This is an important note that should have been included in this recipe.
