There are two ways these muffins can be enjoyed: as a gift given to someone, or as a treat to enjoy yourself. In the gift scenario, simply layer the ingredients in a jar, and print out our instructions on how to turn the jar into muffins! Watch our video below to learn more :) The muffins are not too sweet, and are deliciously festive tasting.
Lightly grease a muffin tin and preheat the oven to 350Β°F (180Β°C)*.
Add all of the dry ingredients to a large bowl. Mix until well combined.
Then add the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Spoon the mixture evenly into the wells of the muffin tin. For decoration, add some chopped nuts and dried fruits on top. This is optional.
Bake on the middle rack of the oven for 20 - 25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the centre comes out clean. Let cool, and enjoy!
Notes
β Use store-bought almond flour, or make it yourself by adding raw almonds to a food processor and blending until you achieve a flour-like consistency.
* We used top and bottom heating (not fan-assisted/convection).
To gift these muffins in a jar, watch the accompanying video, or follow these instructions:
In order for the ingredients to fit, you'll need 1L mason jar. To create even and clean lines in your jar, lower your spoon low into the jar when adding each new layer. Then clean the inside of the glass with a small silicone pastry brush to clear it of any flour residue. Using the pastry brush, level out each layer before adding in the next layer.
Add the ingredients in the following order: flour (Β½ cup) > cacao powder > flour (Β½ cup) > brown sugar > flour (Β½ cup).
In a small bowl, mix together the sugar, flaxseeds, baking powder, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, salt, and cardamom. Then add this to the jar. Atop this layer, add the almond flour.
Use the back of a small ladle or measuring spoon to press down firmly and evenly on the contents within the jar. This should compress all the layers, creating more space at the top of the jar for the following ingredients.
Finally, add in the chopped walnuts, dried figs, and chocolate chips. Seal the jar with a lid, and decorate with string or flowers.
Print our ready-made printable PDF template to give with the jar, or write the following instructions on a card yourself:
To make the muffins: 1) Preheat the oven to 350Β°F (180Β°C). 2) Lightly grease a muffin tin. 3) Empty the jar into a large bowl, and stir to combine all the dry ingredients. 4) Add 1 cup (240 mL) plant-based milk, and β cup (80 mL) vegetable oil to the same bowl, and stir until just combined. For decoration, you could save some chopped nuts and fruits to put on top of the muffins before they go into the oven. 5) Divide the batter evenly into the wells of the muffin tin, and bake in the oven on the centre rack for 20 - 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out of the centre clean. Let cool, and enjoy!
Storage
The cooked muffins can be stored in an airtight container on the counter for up to 3 days.
The layered jar can be stored in a dark and cool place for up to 1 month.

What to do with a bag of organic figs lying around? Make muffins of course. Figs, walnuts, almond flour, chocolate, it's an interesting combination that works. The sceptics complained but ate them. They're not overly sweet, and with the walnuts, I love the crunch. One muffin can be filling, must be the almond flour. It was a perfect little snack while supervising 300 kids at recess.

Iβve made your typical chocolate chip and blueberry muffins dozens of times. Thus, I wanted to try something new. I gave this one a try as I was just missing the figs. The flavor was okay. I loved the chocolately part and the chocolate chips, but I didnβt like the figs or pecans (I subbed instead of walnuts as I donβt like walnuts). Since the whole idea was a nutty fig muffin, it looks like I donβt like figs in my desserts. Iβm still not discouraged from venturing out and trying new, fun recipes! Thank you PUL!

Hi there, Ariana! Fresh figs could be used, but they might make the muffins wetter. You could reduce the soy milk slightly to compensate. Let us know how it goes if you experiment with the muffins π€

Always a winner. Theyβre so easy to change-up with different dried fruit and spices. Iβve also made a batch subbing stewed apple for oil (as a family member needs to reduce their intake) and although it changed the density a bit they still turned out great!

I was inspired by such wonderful comments but when making these muffins the batter seemed much thicker than expected, not like the images at all. I checked and double checked the recipe and Iβm confident I followed it to the letter. The results are more rock cake than muffins but they smell amazing nonetheless. Too hot to taste yetβ¦..will keep you posted
PUL Team - Feb. 19, 2024, 6:52 a.m.
Hi Suzi! In case you use cup measurements, it might help to ensure that the flour isn't too packed in the cup, but rather, gently spooned into the measuring cup and levelled. This will ensure that not too much flour is added, which could be what's contributing to a dry batter. If at all possible, measuring the ingredients in grams/mL ensures even more accurate results (when compared to measuring in cups). Another reason the batter can end up too thick is if the batter is over-mixed. Ideally, try to only stir until the wet and dry mixture are just combined. We hope this helps in case you give it another go!
Suzi - Feb. 24, 2024, 9:58 p.m.
Thank you for the advice. Iβm going to give them another go and will let you know.

Hi Sadia and PUL team, I'm planning to do this as Christmas gift this year..I'm str to find the vegan chocolate chips in The Netherlands. Could you give me ideas about where to find them or how to replace them? I guess cacao nibs would be too bitter. Thanks!

PUL Team - Nov. 15, 2023, 1:31 a.m.
Hey Anta, how kind of you to gift the muffins! We haven't tested it out, but we imagine you could use an equal amount of unsweetened applesauce in place of the oil. Let us know if you confirm that this substitute works π€
As for the ready-to-use printout, you can find it under the directions tab on our app, under the 'Notes' header. Hey Alice, we haven't tested out the muffins with coconut flour so we can't say with certainty. We've heard positive reviews with all-purpose flour, oat flour, and sunflower seed flour in place of almond flour but they'll make the muffins more dense rather than airy. If you give coconut flour a try do let us know how it goes π

Hi Sadia! Thanks for your great work ππΌ Very much appreciated. I have recreated various recipes from your website (for non-vegan family and friends) and all came up great and have garnered praise π Iβd love to give this one a try but I never use wheat flour. Can these muffins be made with whole grain spelt flour instead and do I need to adjust the quantity? Thanks for your reply and always looking forward to whatβs new on PUL π
PUL Team - Dec. 21, 2022, 7:33 p.m.
Hey Gabriela, aw thank you for the very kind words! So glad the PUL recipes are being enjoyed. We haven't tested it out so can't say with certainty, but imagine you could use spelt flour with some adjusting. Reducing the amount of liquid by around a quarter and adding more based on the batter texture may be a good start. Spelt flour has less gluten than all-purpose, so the muffins might have a less fluffy texture and structure after baking. If you test it out, do let us know how it goes π

This recipe is an absolute gem, probably my favorite you've ever uploaded on the website! Not only is satisfies every single one of my warm-flavour/spiced-desserts needs, but it's a hit in the whole family and trust me when I say that satisfying a non-vegan family with a vegan dessert - well muffin in this case - is a HUGE accomplishment. I've been making this recipe every fall/winter, especially before Christmas, since you uploaded it back in 2020. I don't even know how many times I've watched this video, the vibes are just immaculate and it instills me so much peace I find myself going back to it every time I'm overwhelmed. Hey there, Ambra, so kind of you to make a DIY gift! We haven't tested it out but we had one positive review from Zsuzsa on November 10th who shared some modifications. A mix of gluten-free flours generally works better than using just one gluten-free flour on its own if you're interested. I guess fall is calling my name, because I just made these (and ate one still warm from the oven), and they are delicious! I used hazelnuts instead of walnuts but otherwise didn't change the recipe. I have a long week ahead of me, and these are going to be a great thing to look forward to! I've followed PULs for a long time on YouTube, but I don't know if I've ever made a recipe before- that is certainly going to change, based on how successfully these turned out.

Really good and unique! I did have to add a lot more liquid. An extra 3/4 cup almond milk and about 1/4 cup apple sauce. I might do more figs and less chocolate next time, Iβve never had figs baked in anything and itβs delicious! Thanks!
PUL Team - June 9, 2022, 5:38 p.m.
Hey there, Ambur, thank you for taking the time to share your experience with it! More figs sound lovely. For needing more liquid, sometimes this happens when too much flour is added. Did you measure using the gram and mL amounts listed, or using the cup and Tbsp amounts?
In case you use cup measurements, perhaps it might help to ensure that the flour isn't too packed in the cup, but rather, gently spooned into the measuring cup and levelled. This will ensure that not too much flour is added if you give the recipe another try. It's also possible the batter may have been over mixed so considering to only stir until just combined is another idea. We hope this helps for now, Ambur, and thanks again π

This has become our new favourite muffin recipe! I made these twice this week and I used oat flour instead of almond flour for one batch, and almond flour for the second batch. The first batch (using oat flour) was definitely more dense, but it tasted almost like a "granola bar muffin" which we didn't mind at all! The oat flour was less expensive, and it didn't impact the taste, just the texture. The second batch (using almond flour) had a more airy texture, but tasted equally delicious. Thank you for yet another amazing recipe! Happy New Year!

PUL Team - Dec. 22, 2021, 4:30 p.m.
Hi Kanako, aw so nice of you to make them for your friend! Roasted pumpkin seeds work well as a substitute for walnuts in the one.
To substitute the almond flour, we've had some reviews with all-purpose flour in place of it, although the muffins will be much more dry and dense. This is because all-purpose flour has gluten and absorbs liquid differently than almond flour. Adding more plant-milk may help a bit, or perhaps oat flour may be a fun alternative to experiment with! Do let us know how it goes if you test it out π

Hi! Could I use rice flour instead of all-purpose flour to make them gluten free?
PUL Team - Dec. 4, 2021, 11:03 p.m.
Hi there, Laura! Since all-purpose flour has gluten, it helps give the muffins a fluffier texture and structure. Rice flour might not offer this and will likely not absorb the wet ingredients as nicely. We'd recommend trying half rice flour and half all-purpose flour to start or try a smaller batch if possible and see how you like it.
Alternatively, a mix of gluten-free flours generally works better than using just one gluten-free flour on its own if you're interested. If so, here's a flour blend recipe from Minimalist Baker that might help: https://minimalistbaker.com/dβ¦. Do let us know if you experiment with the muffins π

Hi there, Nadia! Thanks for the question. We've had some reviews with all-purpose flavour in place of almond flour and it's possible, although the muffins will be much more dry and dense. Making these for the week! This past Christmas we actually prepped them in jars like your video and gave them away as gifts. They are delicious and have become a staple. Thank you, Sadia!

these muffins are wonderful! They are easy to prepare, moist and flavorful. I added all the spices and used dried cherries and chopped dates since that is what I had and I wanted to make the muffins "right now." My kitchen smelled amazing. The only complaint I had was that my family ate the entire batch in one day. Next time I will certainly double the recipe. Thank you for adding a wonderful new fall muffin to my collection.

Can I use microwave for this recipe instead of oven ? And how long should I bake by using microwave? Also, I would like to know if all purpose flour could be a substitute of almond flour? Thank youuu
PUL Team - Sept. 27, 2021, 4:22 a.m.
Hi Sing! Thanks for the questions. We can't say with absolute certainty as we haven't tested out the muffins in the microwave. The cook time would likely be much less though. Perhaps trying a small batch of the recipe in short intervals may help if you experiment with it π
All-purpose flour in place of the almond flour may work, although the muffins will end up a fair bit more dry and dense. This is because all-purpose flour has gluten and absorbs liquid differently than almond flour. Do let us know if you experiment with it!
Sing Hui - Nov. 2, 2021, 5:06 p.m.
Hello, Greetings from Malaysia.. I've tried it out by using all purpose flour. It turned out dryer than by using almond flour. Anyway it tasted really good still ! Love this recipe! Thank you Sadia & PUL team for all the amazing videos, recipes, thoughtful pdf recipes, website & everything.

PUL Team - Sept. 20, 2021, 4:04 p.m.
Hi Leen, thanks for the question and kind words! We haven't tested it out, but we imagine the muffins could be stored in the freezer for up to a month in an air-tight container, ideally reheating before enjoying π Do let us know if you test out!

These were a bit denser than I had anticipated but then realized they were perfect for an on-the-go breakfast, and I LOVED the flavor combo! As always, any recipe I try from here never fails!!
I have made these at least 4 times and they are amazing. They are heavier, so perfect for the morning staple. Since I am pregnant sneaking in walnuts and figs is a winner!! Love these!

I've made these twice so far, and they are delicious! Perfect with a cup of coffee or tea. I subbed coconut sugar for brown sugar, and I've tried them with turkish dried figs once and dried cranberries/golden raisins the other... I like the cranberries better here, but both were good! :) Thanks for the great recipe!

Can I use oat flour in place of the al purpose flour?
PUL Team - June 5, 2021, 8:17 p.m.
Hello Laura, thanks for the question and patience as we're catching up on website questions! We'd recommend trying half oat and half all-purpose flour to start if possible, and see how you like it. Then try the next time with all oat flour. All-purpose flour has gluten in it, which helps give the muffins a fluffier muffin-like texture and structure. Oat flour might not offer this, but it could be a fun one to experiment with π and if you do, please let us know how it goes!

This recipe is absolutely delicious! πI made it for my boyfriend and some friends who came to visit us and it was the star of the evening. I got so many compliments, and the muffins were gone very fast. I will definitely make this recipe again! π₯°
These are so decadent and moist. Something to look forward to π₯°
These are fabulous!!!! Spice is just right and not overpowering, chocolate chips add a richness, and the texture is divine. Crunchy on the outside and moist in the middle. Iβm definitely going to make the layered mix in jars for gifts.
Mm these were quite tasty, especially right out of the oven when the crust is a little crunchy.
Hi there! These look delicious. Can they be done with fresh figs? Thanks!
Yummyyyy! I bake these muffins for my family or to bring to our friends when visiting them. Well-balanced and flavourful, just the right amount of moist and spices. And so easy to make! Thank you!
Buonissimi! giΓ regalati 4 volte e sono stati un successone <3
Grazie!
TrΓ¨s bon β€οΈ un bon goΓ»t de pain d'Γ©pices et de chocolat avec le croustillant des figues.
I doubled the ingredients and baked it as one gigantic cake, and it was extremely delicious, it turned out very well. This is one of my favourite recipes!
Absolutely stunning muffins, such a beautiful subtle taste from the figs and the spices. I opted not to use clove and cardamom. I got 17 muffins out of the batch. Great afternoon t snack
Christmas in a muffin π
Hi Sadia and PUL team, I'm planning to do this as Christmas gift this year..I'm str to find the vegan chocolate chips in The Netherlands. Could you give me ideas about where to find them or how to replace them? I guess cacao nibs would be too bitter. Thanks!
Made these and theyβre great, can you substitute the oil for apple sauce? Also would like to gift them this year, will the print out for instructions to add to the gift be available?
Hey, can i sub almond flower for coco flour ?
And really - post a new video, please ;)

Made them both for a gift and at home. These muffins are so good it should be illegal! π
Very good
I'm just done making jars of this as gifts and I have to say it was such great fun! I'm sure the muffins will turn out delicious but what I know for sure is that my loved ones will be really happy to receive such a practical, useful and decorative present.
Hi Sadia! Thanks for your great work ππΌ Very much appreciated. I have recreated various recipes from your website (for non-vegan family and friends) and all came up great and have garnered praise π
Iβd love to give this one a try but I never use wheat flour. Can these muffins be made with whole grain spelt flour instead and do I need to adjust the quantity? Thanks for your reply and always looking forward to whatβs new on PUL π
What a great job you've done with it and with this recipe!
Thank you Sadia for being so dedicate! You and your team are incredible!
Hi Sadia, i was looking for a diy gift, I founded this recipe and iβm so interested in π€©
The only issue is that my friend is gluten intolerant, so i was wondering if i could substitute the all purpose flour with a gf flour. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks for your blog, itβs amazing!
Lots of love from Italy
I guess fall is calling my name, because I just made these (and ate one still warm from the oven), and they are delicious! I used hazelnuts instead of walnuts but otherwise didn't change the recipe. I have a long week ahead of me, and these are going to be a great thing to look forward to! I've followed PULs for a long time on YouTube, but I don't know if I've ever made a recipe before- that is certainly going to change, based on how successfully these turned out.
Hi I made tried out the recipe today. The muffins were delicious and went down really well! but I'm wondering if I could make this recipe into a loaf cake as well?
This is such a creative holiday present! I've made them a couple of times and also gave them away as a cute jar filled with goodness - which it is. And the muffins taste so delicious!! Would really recommend this!
Giving this as a holiday present is such a cute idea!! I made them for myself and they are delicious.
Really good and unique! I did have to add a lot more liquid. An extra 3/4 cup almond milk and about 1/4 cup apple sauce. I might do more figs and less chocolate next time, Iβve never had figs baked in anything and itβs delicious! Thanks!
Great recipe. I skipped the flaxseed, reduced oil to 3T and added 1 egg and 1tsp vanilla. Used 1/2 oat flour and 1/2 almond flour for that piece of the recipe. 1/2 cup sugar is enough.
Incredible muffins! I can proudly bring them in to my chef coworker tomorrow to impress :-) I left out the ginger, cardamom and clove due to friends sensitivities and tastes and they still tasted fantastico! Highly recommend!
Great recipe!
Gifted these in the mason jar. A total hit! Thank you Sadia!
Super easy, taste amazing, and the whole family loved them! Will be making them again:) thank you PUL!
I love these muffins. I have made this recipe twice to share as Christmas gifts. And for my own family 4 times this month: Twice substituting dried sour cherries. Everyone loves them. One note my batter seemed a little dry so I add a splash more βmilkβ. Happy New Year. Jennifer
Hi! I made these muffins for myself and loved them! I wanted to give them to my friend this year, but sheβs allergic to nuts. What can I use instead and how much of it?
Thank you for the inspiration! Muffins are absolutely delicious and the process of making this cute jar was therapeutic for me. I wish you happy holidays!
Thank youu! I made it last year for my best friend and this Christmas I will do it for my cousins! Great idea!
These are soo delicious! The spices make this taste so festive and amazing! I will be making this for a friend of mine for Christmas. Thank you for the great gift idea :-)
Incredibly delicious recipe and very original idea for a gift! Thanks a lot!
Hi! Could I use rice flour instead of all-purpose flour to make them gluten free?
Hi! Can you substitute the almond flour for regular all-purpose flour? The almond flour is quite expensive and I have a tight budget... :)
These are SOOOOOOOOO good!
I tried it with gluten-free all-purpose flour instead of 'simple' all-purpose flour and instead of almond flour. It needed much more yoghurt, I put there like 340 ml :)) it became more solid than I think it should have been, but it came out totally fine. it is delicious!
p.s., it would be awesome if some recipes would have a gluten-free version as well π
Hello :) Do you think I could substitute the almond flour for oat flour? Also this is such a lovely ideaβΊοΈ
Hi there! These look amazing and Iβd love to give them as a gift β but the person Iβd like to gift these to isnβt a fan of dried fruit. Is there something I could use in place of figs (that is not another kind of dried fruit)? π
