Ingredients
-
1½ cups (360 mL)canned full-fat coconut milk†
-
½ cup (112 g)granulated sugar
Use this to make
Make your own
Directions
- Add the coconut milk and sugar to a heavy-bottomed* saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat while stirring occasionally.
- Turn the heat to low, and let the milk very gently simmer for 45 minutes. Be careful to not let it simmer too aggressively. Give it a stir every 5 - 10 minutes. The mixture should reduce in volume by about half in that time.
- The condensed milk is ready when it has slightly thickened but is still pourable. When a spoon is dipped into the mixture, it should leave a thin layer on the spoon when the spoon is lifted out of the saucepan. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.
- Transfer the condensed coconut milk to a sterilized jar to fully cool off. Transfer to the fridge for at least one hour, it will thicken more in the fridge as it cools**. Enjoy!
Notes
- †We recommend using a coconut milk can that has no emulsifier (such as guar gum) in the ingredient list. We've found this results in a condensed milk with a more desirable and homogeneous consistency.
- * A heavy-bottomed pot is thicker at the base and will absorb and distribute the heat more evenly. It's less prone to hot spots, which means there's less chance the condensed milk will burn.
- ** Out of the fridge, you may notice your condensed milk is thinner or thicker than the one pictured. This is normal and may depend on different factors, such as the fat content of the coconut milk used, or the intensity at which the mixture was simmering on the stove.
Storage
- The sweetened condensed coconut milk can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

This came out so delicious, but it remained completely liquidy. I allowed it to simmer an extra twenty minutes, and I made sure to continue stirring to prevent any burning. Any recommendations to get it to actually thicken up next time?
Hi PUL team!
Can I reduce the amount of sugar in this recipe? For example, would it work if I reduce the sugar in this recipe to 1/2 or 1/4 and then make the coconut macaroon recipe with it?
This was phenomenal :D Just one note foe other folks (maybe I have overread it) ... If you increase the amount of servings, the time to simmer increases as well. I doubled the recipe and it took almost double the time of the original. Makes sense, huh? x)
I'm waiting for it to cool fully but I snuck a taste and it is great! I can't wait to make the vegan fudge.
Thank you for this because I feel like I can try using it as a substitute in some of my pre vegan-eating desserts!
Hi PUL Team!
How long does this keep in the fridge?
Thanks 😊
Hello 😊
I am wondering if you have ever tried this with honey instead of sugar? We try to avoid refined white sugar and cane sugar in our home. I made it with a sugar substitute called SWERVE and it came out pretty grainy but we’ve been enjoying and using it none the less!
Love this recipe. I use it to make my homemade coquito 😊
I loved the taste of this. I don’t have a heavy bottom pot so I was hoping I could still make this work. I also have a gas stove and I feel the lowest setting is still too hot so of course mine came out runny 😔. I will use it for my coffee instead of the tiramisu recepie that I wanted to try.
I used to spread sweetened condensed milk on toast. It was such a nostalgic treat as a child, but obviously not the most nutritious option lol. Thanks for sharing a plant-based version - I can't wait to try it :)
Thanks! This was easy and straightforward. Used this sweetened condensed milk for the vegan chocolate fudge recipe. YUM.
I've found vegan sweetened condensed milk to be frustrating uselessness. Put some in coffee, make magic cookie bars or fudge. Is that it?
Can I use coconut sugar or any other sugar for this condense milk recipe?
Tried this a few days ago and the result is absolutely delightful. I love my iced coffee and even though I am not vegan, I'm always excited to try plant based recipes.
Gives my coffee a rich velvety coconut flavor! I'm hooked :)
I didn't pay attention to the ingredients of my coconut milk to be honest, also didn't use a heavy bottom pot but the milk still comes out very nice and thick.
Not sure what I am doing wrong? I used full fat coconut milk with no emulsifier’s listed in the ingredients, but still ended up with just a runny consistency. After letting it cool in the fridge the milk separated leaving a hard layer on top & completely runny milk underneath. I was also careful not to let the temperature get to hot.
Hello, thank you for the easy recipe! Exited to try it in my Thai Ice Tea! One question for that: can I store it as freezed icecubes? I read the milk could separate from water when doing that but maybe it's different with coconut milk? Thanks for a respond!
I wanted to make my own condensed coconut milk, but I see it's best to use a can without any emulsifiers? But all the cans I have found thus far have emulsifiers in them, even the Fair Trade brand one (I'm in The Netherlands). Which one do you use? I can only find cartons (18% fat content) that have no emulsifiers in them...
I'm so excited to find this! I live in Shanghai now, and "special" vegan foods are challenging to come by. Thanks so much for sharing this!
I couldn't resist and doubled my coffee intake yesterday, because this is so so yummy! I just had the condensed milk in my morning black tea and it never has been that creamy and delicous. I just have to be extremly careful to not eat the whole jar with a spoon, it is a pure treat but a candy after all. :)
I'm currently making it and oh my- knowing I have a sweet tooth, I won't be able to resist eating this with a spoon just like that haha! I'm looking forward to adding this onto pancakes and also, I'll try it together with coffee or matcha latte! As always, amazing recipes xx
Can I use maple syrup instead sugar?
This turned out awesome! I’m going to try doubling the recipe next time, as I need a good amount to make Magic Bars. Thank you for this! :)

Could I use coconut sugar as the sweetener?
Hello, So excited to find this recipe. I have a question. After making the sweetened condensed milk, can I bake with it? Wanted to try a key lime pie, that typically just has sweetened condensed milk and fresh lime juice. Plan to make a brownie crust for the pie.
Thank you for sharing this recipe, I've used fresh coconut milk today and it tasted good but it has a smell of coconut 😁 I'll try using this tomorrow for the coffee
I made it yesterday night and this morning I'm having the best coffee EVER!!!!!
Hi there, I have a quick question. Can I use coconut cream instead of coconut milk?
Thank you : )
Oh I can't wait to make this! May have to turn some of it into dulce de leche :)
We are on our 3rd batch of the condensed milk recipe, but this one has tons of fat floating on the top?? It is not incorporating into the mixture like before. Any tips?
I am going through all your iced coffee recipes and they are great.
I could only find coconut milk with guar gum but it came out fine 😊
Love the condensed milk and because I love the flavour of vanilla i added a tsp of vanilla sugar! Perfect!
Thank you
I made this today.
So creamy and delicious!
I had to be very careful with the temperature because a batch had curdled when I tried a few months ago.
But, it was a success today :)
I immediately made a cold coffee drink and a coffee-chocolate fudge with it. Smooth!
Thank you
Easy and very yummy!
I was a huge fan of sweetened condensed milk, in another life, and I'm glad to be able to prepare a vegan version thanks to your recipe. Very easy to prepare, with only two ingredients (that are always in my pantry), and it tastes delicious. I'm sure it's awsome in a vegan chaï tea latte too.
Prepared the milk today for the first time in advance for the Iced Coffee recipe I plan to do tomorrow. Tried it today with some Ayurvedic tea, came out perfectly! Thank you :)
This was so easy to make and absolutely delicious 💕
Delicious, easy, and perfect for recipes that require condensed milk!
I tried this and I loved it, It's my go too for my hot and cold coffee
Thank you so much for this recipe - this is the best vegan condensed milk I've tried in a while!
Easy and straight forward!
So tasty!
This is so delicious! I used Dark Brown Sugar to make this, as that was the only kind of sugar I had on hand an it came out amazing! I made some Vietnamese coffee with it, and my mum loved it. Thank you so much!
This looks so amazing, cannot wait to try it! Thank you for posting this!!
So delicious....I just have to try not to eat the whole lot at once straight from the jar!
I'm so excited to make this! I don't have a heavy bottom saucepan although I have a large enamel coated dutch oven.. but will try it on my stainless steel saucepan for now and see how it goes.
So delicious! It came out perfectly.
Can I make this with other plant milks? Unfortunately, I have a coconut allergy.
Hi Sadia, thank you for sharing these wonderful recipes. Yesterday I tried the vegan condensed milk recipe, but I ran into an issue. After 30 minutes of heating or so, oil started separating from coconut milk. Any tips on how to avoid that in the future? I used organic coconut milk
Delicious
Tried today! So delicious 😋 thanks pickuplimes!!!
Thanks for this recipe. The flavor is just divine.
This looks great. I can't wait to try it!
Love this recipe!
looks greaaaat!
