Main

Upma is a traditional Indian dish that is usually served for breakfast, but you can enjoy it at any time of the day. It is made from roasted semolina, nuts, and nicely balanced spices that give this dish so much flavour. In this version, we added some vegetables to make the dish more colourful and nutritious.

In step 4 the ingredients does not list the drained split chickpeas that are in fhe directions. So when I was crossing them off, it was almost missed.
Outcome was good. I had to sub wholewheat couscous for semolina so resulted in a different texture of course.

Hey Nicole, thanks for taking the time to leave the feedback. We generally only list ingredients once in the main step of the recipe, unless ingredients are listed on a preparation page if it's recommended to prepare them before cooking.

One reason for this is that the ingredient may change from how it was initially listed. For instance, in this recipe, the split yellow chickpeas are initially listed as dry (like in step 1) but when we use them in step 4, they're now soaked and drained. We'll explore ways to make this more clear moving forward 😃

Maybe if it was in Step 0 to prep all ingredients with an updated photo to show it as well? It helped in the shola recipe.

Made it again with semolina. Curry leaves definitely make it taste more authentic. 🌱
(Almost forgot the split chickpeas again)

Nice and authentic. I added 4 cups of water at the end instead of three.

I really enjoy trying your recipes on traditional dishes from various countries 🇮🇳🇦🇹🇯🇵
This upma was amazing: filling, great flavour from the spices and veggies, and creamy. The lemon juice was definitely necessary; gave a “lighter” touch. I will have this again for many breakfasts in the future

I am curious to know why you are soaking the split chickpea in the boiling water.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Sept. 4, 2023, 4:06 p.m.

Hey Swaths, we prefer to soak the split chickpeas in boiling water because it helps speed up the cooking time, and also has benefits on digestion and absorption of nutrients. We talk more about the benefits of soaking in our article here: pickuplimes.com/article/benef… 🙂

Upma is delicious! If you want to make this faster you can add frozen mixed vegetables instead of chopping all the veggies
