Traditionally, falafels are made with raw chickpeas, soaked overnight, but to speed things up, we're using canned cooked chickpeas for this recipe. These tender, easy-to-make falafels are perfectly flavoured with fresh herbs like dill and cilantro, and warm spices like cumin and cayenne.
Blend the ingredients in a food processor until well combined.
Scoop up 2 Tbsp of the chickpea mixture and press into little patties, about 1 cm (ยฝ inch) thick.
Add some of the oil to a large pan on medium-high heat. Working in batches, place the falafels in a single layer in the pan. Fry until golden, about 3 - 4 minutes per side. Repeat with the remaining oil and falafels.
Enjoy the falafels in a wrap, on a salad, or on their own with a dip!
Storage
Store leftover falafels in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Store in the freezer for up to 1 month.

Totally delicious - I baked half and did half in the pan. Both ways are great.

These are really good! They just crumbled a little, like the patties don't stay a lot together, but still good to enjoy right away!

Hi, I made these falafels but they turned out to be very bitter. I had to throw them all out ๐ข Could it be from my chickpea flour? Cause it was from a pre-opened package (kept in a jar from a year ago๐ )?
PUL Team - July 5, 2024, 7:28 p.m.
Hi Parnian! We're sorry to hear this! It's possible the chickpea flour was the culprit, especially if it was old. The sunflower seeds could also cause a bitter flavour if they were raw or old. Creamy sauces like tzatziki or hummus could hopefully help add a sweeter flavour ๐ค

My falafels are very dry and they crack when I put them in air fryer and on the pan they are braking. What did I do wrong?:(
PUL Team - April 19, 2024, 5:26 a.m.
Hey there, Linh, oh no! Did you use a cup to measure out the ingredients or did you weigh them out? Adding too many chickpeas could be a culprit. You could try adding more chickpea flour, or even all-purpose flour, to the mixture to help it bind better. We hope this helps if you give the falafels another try ๐

These came out really well in my air fryer. The only thing I need to figure out is why my mixture was a little too crumblyโฆ.I had to be very delicate in moving the precooked ones to the fryer.

Hey Sarah, thanks for sharing your experience with the falafels! It was likely the chickpeas, did you use a cup measure or weigh them? You could try adding more chickpea flour (or even regular flour) to the mixture to help it bind better. Hope this help for now ๐ค

if I want to freeze these, should I make, fry and then freeze them? Or just make the falafels and freeze them โrawโ. Thanks for all these nice recipes ๐
PUL Team - Aug. 19, 2023, 10:08 p.m.
Hey Sandra, it's best to fry these at first, then freeze them in a single layer. When frozen, transfer to an airtight container to freeze for up to 1 month. When ready to enjoy, just reheat in a pan or in the oven ๐

Hey Melanie, I'm sure we will at some point! In the meantime, you're welcome to check out our video called "What I eat in a day, meal prep edition" where we make some falafels. Granted, they aren't the traditional way of making falafels, but just a fun alternative. I hope this helps for now :)

Could you share us some recipes for plant-based protein-packed balls cooked in the oven? Like including crushed tofu, beans, peas as main ingredients. I find some vegan balls in grocery stores, I'd like to make some at home to save more money.

Hey Bomi, thanks for the suggestion! We've noted it down as an idea for future content. In the meantime, if you're interested and haven't already seen yet, you may find our Green Pea & Chickpea Falafels a fun way to change falafels up: pickuplimes.com/recipe/baked-โฆ ๐

I made these ahead of a busy week and they are a game changer! I like how simple they were to make and they are versatile enough that it didn't feel like like I was eating the same thing every day. My favourite way to eat the was crumbled over a salad like some protein-packed croutons :)

A lovely idea to crumble them over salad, Lucie!
