Ingredients
-
1½ cups (202 g)raw hazelnuts
-
⅓ cup (80 mL)unsweetened soy milk
-
-
6Medjool dates, pits removed
-
¼ tspsalt
Directions
- Line a baking tray and preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C)*.
- Spread the hazelnuts onto the baking tray. Bake for 10 - 12 minutes, until lightly golden, stirring once halfway**.
- When cooled enough to handle, pick up the hazelnuts a handful at a time and rub firmly between the palms of your hands (or in a clean kitchen cloth) so the skin falls off. Place the peeled hazelnuts in a high-speed food processor (ideally 600W or higher)***.
- Blend on high for 4 - 5 minutes****. Add the remaining ingredients and blend again until smooth.
- Taste test. For a thinner consistency, consider adding more coconut oil and a touch more maple syrup. Enjoy!
Notes
- † Refined coconut oil is coconut oil that doesn't smell or taste like coconuts. If you prefer a distinct coconut taste, use unrefined coconut oil instead.
- * We used top and bottom heating (not fan-assisted/convection).
- * Careful to not overcook, as the nuts continue to 'toast' when taken out of the oven.
- *** Using a blender for this is not advised, as there is not enough liquid.
- **** If your food processor isn't very powerful, blend for an extra 5 minutes or add a bit of vegetable oil for smoother processing. If the mixture gets too hot, let it cool slightly to prevent damaging your food processor.
Storage
- Store in a mason jar in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Love this! Feel so much better about making and eating this rather than commercial brand. Delicious!
This is perfection. I just made this with my kid. Served with Swedish pancakes and banana slices. My oh my. Happy place! 😊
This is absolutely divine! We spread it on banana bread and it tastes amazing!
Thank you for the recipe!
This is soo delicious!
Could the coconut oil be swapped for vegetable or canola oil, or are those too heavy?
Delicious!
10/10 I don’t have a very powerful food processor so it’s closer to chunky peanut butter consistency but it’s still so delicious
Delicious! It was a bit too sweet for me and I only put 4 dates (maybe they were too big?) but still delicious. It has a strong date flavour so thats a plus if you love them like me!
Not sweet enough for me but I had to skip the dates because I hate them. Will have to have a think what I can replace them with for the sugar content.
Love it thanks!
Another family fav. We made this back in 2017 but haven’t had it since then. Taste even better 😋
This is my favorite recipe among all recipes. I used to always make it for myself, now I make it for my daughter too. 🥹She also loves it♥️
Made it today, soooo yummy 🤤 for some reason coconut oil didn’t blend in with the nutty butter and when I transferred from the blender to the jar, the oil separated completely from the butter. So I’ve got myself quite thick Nutella butter, but still very very yummy.
24 servings?! I would say more like 5. :D This is sooooo yummy that I could eat spoonfuls of it straight out of the jar. Thank you so much for the recipe! <3
PS. After roasting the hazelnuts I couldn't get all the skin off them. Does it matter? I mean, it still tastes excellent.
This is a game changer!
It’s so delicious, it was so easy (I managed to buy already roasted hazelnuts) and it’s so good in anything 🤤 Definitely make this if you like hazelnut chocolate!
Not buying any vegan chocolate spread ever again!
It was decadent 🤌🤌🤌
I simply love it! <3
We found the taste to be more like a healthy date chocolate hazelnut spread rather than a Nutella copycat, so the recipe name could be a bit misleading, but it could be expected given the ingredients and it makes it so you can eat it more regularly! Modifications: It was thick for us - we added 2 Tbsp extra milk but probably could have added a bit more. We only had unrefined coconut oil, but at only 1 Tbsp you couldn’t taste the difference.
Soooooo goooood 🤤. I halved the recipe, but will make the default amount next time because we ate it all so quickly!! 😂 I had some difficulty getting the skin off the hazelnuts, maybe I didn't roast it long enough? I only got about 50% of the skin peeled off, but didn't find it bitter luckily!! Will try again next time
Delicious
Love the recipe. I like things sweeter, so I added some extra sugar 😬
Wonderful recipe!!!
Love this!! I will make it all the time, I love to put it on toast and put some berries on it for an easy breakfast snack. It also helps me eat this instead of the awful, unhealthy nutella.
I finished it wayyy faster than I expected hehe highly recommend
OMG! This is the stuff dreams are made of! This recipe taste just like Nutella without the dairy and preservatives. I am so glad I found it. This will become a staple for sure. Thanks PUL!
I made this receipe when it was first posted on Youtube and while doing the shopping list this week it came to mind again. Still my favourite "Nutella" after all these years. I can't wait to make it again. Theresa (Australia)
I made this nutella today and it was so good! My mom also tried it and said she could eat it out of the jar with a spoon! Thank you for the recipe!
I'm really excited to make this. Can I use cocoa butter instead of the coconut oil?
I’ve been making this Nutella every month! It’s delicious!! It also has a distinct difference in taste from the original Nutella, which makes one wonder what else is in the products we buy.
Tried this recipe a few months ago, and never went back to store-bought nutella!
My must have! I am doing a jar every week. It is delicious on a toast with banana slices. I am lazy and I am buying already roasted nuts :)
This recipe is delicious! I'm amazed at how good it turned out. Thank you for sharing. :)
I wasn't sure if I rated this or commented when I first made this recipe years ago, but if I didn't, this review is long overdue! This is, without question, my favorite vegan Nutella recipe. I absolutely LOVE it. I've made it as-is a number of times, but today, I opted to leave out the coconut oil (definitely enough fat in the hazelnuts!). I added a little more plant milk instead and it still turned out fabulous. YUM!!!! This is definitely a favorite treat. Thank you, as always, Sadia!!!!
Gosh this is delicious. I eat it right off the spoon! It's the perfect sweet treat. Thank you!
Haven't tried it yet but sounds amazing. What other nuts can we use instead of hazelnuts? We have cashews, almonds and walnuts. Can we swap any of those? Would the measurements remain the same?
Hi, I absolutely love this recipe since I have a toddler boy in school now. But, quick question! Can I use regular milk as well instead of lactose-free milk? Will this make the shelf-life less?
Amazing, we love it <3 thank you!
Can you use roasted hazelnut if you can’t find raw?
I'm not a vegan but I'm trying to eat more healthily (and I've been experimenting a few of your recipes already), so I made this Nutella today, and wow, it's sooooooo much better than the jar stuff. Thanks for the recipe!
This Nutella is absolutely amazing! It is so much more tasty than the store bought brand. Thank you for posting this recipe. Yum!
I love this Nutella!
So tasty!!!
I often try out nee and vegan recepties but they are never as good as they look. But in this case… it exceeded my expectations and I absolutely love it!
Thank you!
I am going to try out a lot more recepties from your website :)
This is the second time I try this recipe and omg it's amazing and a family favorite - as it turns out! The only thing is the first time I noticed that after staying in the fridge, the consistency was quite thick to spread on a slice of bread, so this time I added more coconut oil and I think that it is much better! Thanks Sadia!!
So I made the Nutella and it tastes great, BUT the consistency is thin and super nutty! I don’t know how to make my hazelnuts turn into that nut butter substance! There’s no blend button on my Ninja machine. Do you chop it? Or make a dough? What do people do!?
The other day my daughter (who is getting her masters degree currently) said she was wanting Nutella. I told her not to buy it because I saw it on your site when I was looking up an energy ball recipe. Anyway, I made it this morning with croissants and coffee and it did not disappoint! I love that I can do small things to make her week a little less stressful.
I kept the skins on as I like the additional fiber & antioxidants. It's quite yummy on toast with some strawberries.
So grateful for this recipe (and all the other amazing ones)!
This nutella tastes delicious! However, it's the second time I make it and I encountered the same problem each time: the nutella soured after 2 days in my fridge. T_T (Let me clarify that my refrigerator is set at the right temperature. xD) I checked all the commentaries, but apparently I'm the only one to experience that (which is even more troubling). It must be my mistake, but I really don't see it.
I'm using the exact same ingredients as you are so, honestly, I don't get it. Any idea?
Thank you so much Sadia and the PUL team! Keep up the good work. ^^
Great recipe, thanks! I just adapted it a little bit and actually made it with roasted nuts, skin included. May I ask why it is recommended to put away the nut skin? Made it on the Magimix food processor, bought following your advice from a video about kitchen tools. Great advice, I am very happy with it! Good job!
Hi ! Can I skip soy milk to increase the shelf life and ship it ? I have made it a couple of time with milk and it was absolutely delicious 😋 . So good that I want to ship it internationally to my sister but I am not sure if it wouldn’t go bad.
I was stubborn and decided to make this in the blender. After all, it's been handling all other nut butters like a champ. I was wrong. The blender overheated and stopped midway through. I had to transfer the contents to the food processor and finish the job, as I had promised my children that they'd be eating nutella and banana sandwiches for lunch. They also wanted to help make it, and there was a lot of drama when the blender stopped and the 4 year old convinced the 2 year old that the machine he uses to make smoothies every day was broken FOREVER.
In the end, I had twice the cleanup to do. Please don't be stubborn like me. Listen to Sadia and use a food processor.
PS: it was delicious!
PS2: both the toddler and the blender were fine after they cooled down a bit.
I managed to make it in blender, hard work but it came out absolutely delicious!.( don't own food processor yet)
Thank you for amazing recipes ❤️.
I made today nutella and sweet and sour tofu, yummy 😋 😍 😊 👌
This morning I tested my new food processor and the result was incredible, I didn't have to open it every minute to stir sides. When hazelnut butter was finished I just opened your receipt and voila! a Nutella ready on the breakfast table! I love how it's easy and you can just open ingredients and put what you have. It is great weather way. I just regret not having vegan milk at the moment so it turned a little harder ....
Prepared and tried it two days ago during a Brittany crepe party with some friends, totally loved it ! I am no vegan so far but I am opening up to vegan meals recently and your youtube channel has been a considerable push to try out more and more alternatives to what I am used to.
This is the best Nutella I have ever eaten. Also tastes amazing in addition with your Banana bread:)
Hi. Can you swap plant milk for coconut milk? Thank you.
Tastes soooooo gooooood!!! Thank you for this recipe Sadia!!
Absolutely delicious!
Peeling off the hazelnut skins took the longest but it was worth it! I never tried Nutella before (even before going vegan) but now I understand why it's so popular. Thanks for sharing this! Now I have a lovely jar of spreadable, creamy chocolately goodness :)
Soooooo delicious!!
I kust made it and it’s absolutely delicious! I have a question: Can I freeze it? If yes, for how long it will keep in the freezer?
Thank you!
I am a big fan of your work. :)
Thanks for this recipe PUL team! This and the chocolate oatmeal ones are the first things I've made and not been 100% about. I still haven't figured out how I like the oatmeal but with the nutella I had to add more soy milk to make it taste lighter which is how I prefer Nutella. I added another 1/3 cup and a splash or two more to thin it out. Looking forward to using it this week :)
Wow, this is way better than store bought nuttela. You taste way more than just sugar. And so easy to make!!! I am definitly gonna make this again;)
This recipe has a great balance of sweetness! Not overwhelmingly sweet like store bought nutella, and definitely has a more complex flavor. I used pre-roasted hazelnuts which cut down on the time so this all came together pretty quickly. I also soaked the dates in hot water and removed the skins before pitting. Loved the outcome – tasted great with waffles and topped with crumbled frozen raspberries!
What an absolute pleasure this was!!! Thank you so much, made it for my sweet tooth vegan sister, and it has become my favourite too. Seriously, i reduced eating regular nutella, cause of their use of palm oil, even though i loved it, but after tasting this, i'm not going to miss that at all. This tastes different, but so much better. The chocolate and the hazelnut shines through instead of being overpowered by sugar. My favourite way to enjoy it is to just spread it on plain bread with roasted almonds and toasted seeds mix.
Second time I've made this. So in love! I cheated a little and purchased blanched hazelnuts so I didn't have to peel off the skin. I also only have a small vitamix and whilst I know it would be easier in a food blender it certainly does the trick! :) YUM
Outstanding ❤️
Such a delicious spread!!! I tried 'regular' Nutella again after making this to compare, and didn't even enjoy it- it was sooo sweet and not as flavorful as this recipe!!
This was so fun to make! I served this with your waffle recipe, and one non-vegan friend chose this over conventional nutella :)
It was really hard not to spoon the hazelnut-butter, haha. You can really taste the dates, so for someone who really doesn't like dates it might be too much.
AH-MA-ZING!!!
Love from Australia xx
I actually don't like conventional Nutella. But I loooooove this one.
Have been making this spread for about 2 years now. It's so easy!
Thank you <3
It is so easy to make! Very satisfying! What I like the most about this recipe is that it is free of palm oil. It is also a fun way to share this as a gift to friends and promote vegan deliciousness. Thank you for this wonderful recipe ❤
hi Sadia, is there an alternative to dates? it is not winter yet, so I can't find them in the stores
Awesome!
This recipe is unbelievably good! Thank you so much for this recipe :)
This is literally the best ever vegan Nutella! Since going vegan I have struggled to find a replacement for conventional Nutella. There are plenty of vegan chocolate-hazelnut spreads out there - both recipes and store bought jars - but none of them lived up to the original in terms of taste and texture until I came across this recipe. The taste and texture are perfect and this one is actually a lot more wholesome than the original which is full of palm oil, refined sugar and dairy. My favourite way to enjoy Nutella has always been on toasted cinnamon raisin bagels, so very happy to have this back in my life!
Truly is Best. Ever. I make this as a gift for people and they always report that the jar only lasted a day or two in their house! It almost tastes like brownie batter (and is nutritious)!
Ok so this is the best vegan Nutella recipe that I have ever tried.
My BF is in love with it and he asks me to do it every time. We love to make crêpes 🥞 and I banned Nutella from my life a long time ago and I convinced my BF to do the same and we replaced Nutella with jams or confitures but now your vegan Nutella is all that we use
Thank you so much, amazing one!
Soooo good! Well worth the effort. Never liked store bought nutella and I'm so glad I tried this recipe. Great with strawberries!
Hi
Can we use diced hazel nuts for this recipe? All your recipe's are too good:))
Seriously the best Nutella ever! So good my food processor over heated and it started smoking (literally). Luckily my food processor recovered from it. I'll be more careful next time XD
Hi PUL team !
I don’t have access to hazelnuts so is their any other substitute for it.
I really want to try this recipe
It looks so good 😊
I've made this recipe a couple of times and I absolutely love it. I keep coming back to it even after I try other methods of making Nutella and this is truly my favorite. I was wondering if it is possible to make a large amount and freeze it for later consumption?
So delicious and hands down healthier than the store bought version!
Since I tried this recipe, it has become my go-to sweet treat. It just AMAZING! Thank you so so much PUL :)
Absolutely amazing!!! I've made this and just eaten it out of the food processor. I've gifted it to friends, brought it to work. Everyone is always impressed. I'm never buying Nutella again. The hazelnuts are a bit annoying to peel, sometimes I just leave the skins on.
Thank you so much for this recipe! I haven’t bought store Nutella for over a year because I just refuse to do that to my family any more. We have been doing our best to eliminate processed sugar out of our diets and only use natural sweeteners. The best part? My kids ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS! My nine year old said, “Mom! This is better than what you buy in Costco! Please always make this for us!”
THANK YOUUUU! ♥️♥️♥️
I made this and it doesn’t taste sweet at all, just kind of bitter :( does anyone have advice for what I could do? I used unsweetened cacao powder rather than cocoa powder, could that be the issue?
Hello!
In the video: "5 meals I eat each week vegan & healthy ", is your Nutella much lighter and more fluid than on your HP. Like it's real Nutella.
How do I do that?
Sophia gave me the tip to warming up the Nutella in the microwave, But it just wasn't the same. :)
Sadia, thank you for this recipe. My children like it very much. And I am happy - now my children can cook this Nutella themselves.
Have a nice day and new cooking ideas!
Thank you so much for the recipe!
I have one question concerning the choice of dates. Why is it, that everybody is using only medjool dates? I grew up eating only other type of dates and there are, no matter where i go, way cheaper and I always have them on hand. Are medjool actually needed for specific results?
I never tried them, so I am thankful for any experiences made by others :)
So addictive and delicious! Thank you so much for the recipe, I find it to be better than Nutella. It has wonderful depth and a homemade texture that makes me go nuts (pun intended 🤓).
So delicious! Love it!
But since I am only one person, I won't finish it within one week. Do you think I could keep it for longer? Or do you have a recipe to use the Nutella for?
The new website is so so great!
I've been waiting so long to by a food processor and try this recipe, it turned out great only thing is I find it a little bit bitter doesn't bother me but is it possible that this is due to the hazelnuts I used or maybe the cocoa powder idk... also I loooove pick up limes it's amazing
Does it really go bad after a week?
Thank you so much for this recipe. My boyfriend and I are excited to try this. Could we use peanut instead of hazelnuts? Thank you! :)
Is it possible to make such a Nutella spread in Vitamix instead of food processor or is it going to overload it?
Delicious! I think it’s better than Nutella, nuttier, more intense chocolate taste and less sweet. Thanks, I love all of your recipes!
I am not a vegan or vegetarian, but I do like to eat healthy so I love your healthy recipes! THANK YOU SO MUCH for this homemade nutella spread recipe! I'm trying to keep my kids limited (or away) from sugar and preservatives, but still want them to enjoy chocolate flavored snacks, and even myself to eat with Matzo gluten free crackers and tea. I did this recipe a few days ago, and where it didn't go well was when I rubbed the hazelnuts in my hands, many did NOT become skinless. I think it's because I forgot to stir it once while they were being roasted? (I put it on the middle rack of my oven, which I have to learn the difference between top, middle and lower rack). We'll see how it turns out the next time I do it. I couldn't taste it because I'm currently on a strict candida cleanse diet, but both my 3.5 yr old daughter and almost 2 son ate it with oatmeal coconut protein (eggs) pancakes I made from scratch, and my son ate the nutella on Matzo gluten free cracker. They both liked it! So I was happy because it's stressful trying to plan and be creative with healthy meals for my kids. Keep up the good work your doing with your blog and Youtube channel!
Really good! Addicting really. Of course, it didn’t taste like actual Nutella, but I still loved it. Definitely a lot more nutty. The dates also added a good flavor. Wish I had more hazelnuts so I could make it again!
