Frequently asked questions

What makes this an anti-inflammatory smoothie?

This smoothie is rich in anti-inflammatory ingredients like beet, which contain inflammation fighting compounds like betalains, and hemp seeds which are a lovely source of omega-3 fats. The drink is also packed with antioxidants which are components found in plant foods that help protect our body from damage. To learn more about foods that help fight inflammation, see our inflammation article.

What are some ways I can increase the protein in this recipe without using protein powder?

To naturally pack in more protein, try adding a spoonful of nut or seed butter, or extra seeds like flax or chia seeds. Silken tofu or high-protein plant-based yogurt can make it thicker and creamier as well. If you're into heartier smoothies, you could even toss in some quinoa or oats for added texture and nutrition! Just be sure to add more liquid if it’s too thick for your liking.

How can I make this smoothie more sweet?

Beets give this drink a lovely earthy flavour, but if that’s not your jam you can add more fruit such as berries for a boost of natural sweetness. We’ve also heard positive reviews with adding some juice!

The beets give it a very earthy flavor. If that’s not your jam, try adding in some strawberries! Love this smoothie.

Tasted beety.
Lettuce instead of spinach.

It's not nearly as red as shown in the picture but tastes good. Maybe my little beet was too small 🙂

Jeenette - May 27, 2024, 6:03 p.m.

I think the proportions are off on this one. I made 2 servings with one up of spinach and was way too much spinach. Watching the video it's clear that is not one cup. Wish I had watched it before I made this one.

Hey there, Jeenette, we're sad to hear the smoothie wasn't a success. We've double-checked the portions and indeed the spinach is 1 cup. You're welcome to add less if you'd like though, especially if your beet or orange are on the smaller side 🤗

Jeenette - May 28, 2024, 7:13 p.m.

Thank you I'll try it again with more beets and orange. I also packed my 1 cup of spinach, I won't do that next time too!

Delicious!

Love the flavour 🌸👌

vanessa - Aug. 3, 2023, 8:52 p.m.

This is so delicious! I love beetroot in smoothies and I had some cooked leftovers in the freezer that I wanted to use up so I looked for a smoothie recipe on your website and of course I can always rely on pickuplimes! I couldn’t find oranges in my supermarket so I added one peach and a little bit of orange juice to make it more liquidy, I also misread the recipe and bought yoghurt instead of milk but it was still so good, thank you ao much 🥰

So thrilled the smoothie was enjoyed, Vanessa, thank you for sharing your experience with it!

Not too earthy - July 10, 2023, 2:49 p.m.

I was pleasantly surprised by this recipe. I made it just as it was (for a single serving) and thought it might taste overwhelmingly like beets but it didn’t! I do tend to like mine a little more citrus-y so I may put a whole orange instead of half for a single serving next time. Otherwise pretty good!

Wow, that’s delicious!

Liz Protzman - Oct. 24, 2022, 5:07 p.m.

Super delicious & perfectly filling! I’m looking forward to making this my morning go-to smoothie!

So glad it's being enjoyed, Liz!

Constanze - Feb. 11, 2022, 9:01 a.m.

Have to agree with Louise about the really nice earthy flavour 😊 I’ve enjoyed making several of your smoothie recipes in the past in order to use up oranges and wanted to try something new with this one. Really enjoyed it as a smoothie bowl for breakfast 😋

It means so much that the smoothie is being enjoyed, Constanze, thank you!

Louise Magnusson🇸🇪 - Oct. 29, 2021, 8:53 a.m.

Lovely earthy and mellow flavour, which isn’t too strong thanks to the banana and orange. Like Marie, I substituted hemp seeds for cashew butter and it’s really good! I think it’s a better way to absorb fat than having pieces of seeds floating around😝
Smooth texture and no problems to mix in my hand blender

Thanks for sharing the insight, Louise, it's so appreciated!

Gesa - Sept. 16, 2021, 4:10 p.m.

Since first trying out this recipe, which was probably about a week after you posted the respective youtube-video, I have made this smoothie at least 30 times! I really really like it!!! Usually, I have replaced the orange with about 1 dl of orange juice, because that made it easier for my mixer to make it smooth. The combination of beetroot and spinach with the natural sweeteners of banana and orange (juice) is really good!

PUL small logo PUL Team - Sept. 16, 2021, 4:59 p.m.

Aw we're smiling from ear to ear! Thank you for the kind words and review, Gesa 🤗

Marie - Sept. 16, 2021, 8:24 a.m.

I love this smoothie! The ingredients are so accessible and it tastes amazing! I didn’t have hemp seeds so I added a tbsp of cashewbutter to add a little fat, that worked really well. I also only had frozen spinach and cooked red beet. Next time I‘ll peel my orange better because I only have a hand-held blender and it turned out a bit chunky with the orange flesh.

PUL small logo PUL Team - Sept. 16, 2021, 4:57 p.m.

Oh, so lovely to hear, Marie! So happy the smoothie is being enjoyed. Adding a bit more liquid may also help it be less chunky next time if desired 😊
