Veg Manchurian is a popular Indo-Chinese dish, often served as an appetizer or as a main course. Traditionally consisting of deep-fried veggies tossed in a sweet, tangy sauce, this rendition bakes them instead. But feel free to fry them if you prefer! One way or another, this is one of those dishes in which the effort pays off, and will never fail to impress with its bold flavours.

Such a delicious and unique meal! I haven't tried manchurian before and I loved them, especially combined with the sauce. They reminded me a little of dumplings!

Car - Jan. 9, 2025, 6:38 p.m.

I liked these, although I’m not sure about the texture. They were a bit doughy, I’m still undecided. But I loved the flavour, the sauce was delicious, we ate it with haricot verts and rice and combined it was a really nice meal. Even though I’m not completely sold on the texture, I would make them again. And they were easy to make too!

Hey Car, thanks a bunch for sharing your experience with the recipe! In case it helps, draining the veggies well helps the balls get a firmer texture 🫶

Car - Jan. 9, 2025, 7:09 p.m.

Thanks! I drained the veggies, and they were firm enough I think, but I will weigh the flour/maizena/breadcrumbs next time instead of using measuring cups, perhaps I used too much!

Alma Herrera Hjalmarsson - Jan. 8, 2025, 7:20 p.m.

I really liked it! I wasn’t sure that I would like the balls but they had a nice flavour and together with the sauce it became a really comforting meal!

Naina Bawri - Dec. 14, 2024, 12:38 p.m.

Forgot to add the five stars!

Naina Bawri - Dec. 14, 2024, 12:36 p.m.

I made this yesterday and it was delicious. I have a question. My oven doesn't have top/bottom heating. It has fan and fan/top heating. Should I bake the veggies balls longer or should I turn them halfway, about 10 mins in?

Lucky - Dec. 7, 2024, 1:32 p.m.

Super cool and easy recipe! Instead of baking the balls I fried them in a pan and it worked out great:)
The only problem I had was with the amounts. From 1 serving I made 10 instead of 6 balls (and no they weren’t small) and I had to make double the amount of sauce because it was just too little. But these things can be fixed next time I make it so overall it’s a good and yummy recipe;)

🌟 RECIPE UPDATE: To improve this recipe and make the balls more firm, we've removed the bell pepper, and added more flour and breadcrumbs. We also took down the salt and black pepper for a more balanced flavour. We hope you enjoy the updated version! 💛 xo, Sadia (17 Nov 2024)

Eva - Nov. 17, 2024, 10:28 p.m.

I’ve made this several times in the past months and I absolutely love it! It packs a punch and is so flavourful! I see the recipe might have changed a bit (new pictures) did much change? As the original version was working really well for me, I’d love to know what to look out for 😊

PUL small logo PUL Team - Nov. 18, 2024, midnight

Hi Eva, so happy you've been enjoying the recipe! We removed the bell pepper, added more flour and bread crumbs, plus took down the salt and black pepper based on several negative reviews. If you send us an email to support@pickuplimes.com we'd be happy to send a copy of the original recipe 💌

Nike - Aug. 3, 2024, 9:23 p.m.

Quite a bit of effort but very tasty! Could imagine that (air)frying them gives a more satisfying crunch, but nonetheless very tasty!!

Dominika - July 31, 2024, 12:52 p.m.

The soy sauce was too salty for me, the balls flattered melt away. It wasn’t bad, but most of your recipes are much much better :)

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 31, 2024, 3:17 p.m.

Hi Dominika, is there any chance you used a regular soy sauce instead of a sodium-reduced soy sauce? We prefer sodium-reduced soy sauce as it's a touch less salty.

Veggie Manchurians are softer than meat-based ones, but they shouldn't flatten so it sounds like perhaps there was too much moisture. In case it helps, draining the veggies well is important for the balls to achieve a firmer texture. Thanks for your feedback in any case, it really helps us improve what we do 🙌

Dominika - Sept. 10, 2024, 8:20 p.m.

Ohh dear. You’re right! Apologies!

Le_Hatsch - July 28, 2024, 12:18 p.m.

Really delicious although quite some work until you can savor the finished dish. If you have the time, try it!

louise - July 12, 2024, 9:05 p.m.

Surprisingly satisfying to cook and eat.
Used air fryer at 170 for 12 minutes, and came out fine.

Thank you for sharing your experience with it, Louise!

Kristina - June 30, 2024, 7:24 p.m.

I don't know what I do wrong with the soy recipe. I follow the recipe to the letter but each time I cook something with soy the taste of soy is literally the only thing that remains. It is so overpowering. I tries to use half as what is indicated in the recipe (mind you the soy is already with less salt) but it still taste bad... Unfortunately the balls also failed (very soft and cheewie)

PUL small logo PUL Team - July 1, 2024, 5:06 p.m.

Hi Kristina, oh no - it sounds like the soy sauce might be overpowering the other flavours. You could try reducing the soy sauce further or perhaps trying a different brand. For the balls, draining the veggies well and baking them a bit longer can help them achieve a firmer texture. With that said, veggie Manchurians are softer than meat-based ones. Thanks for your feedback though, Kristina, it helps us improve what we do! 🙏

Jeanne Lewis - June 18, 2024, 7:17 p.m.

I'm not a person who enjoys cooking, so maybe I should have avoided trying this recipe. It was long and complicated and things didn't work like they were supposed to. The taste was good but personally, not worth the effort. Love the PUL app, this recipe is just not for me.

PUL Team - June 19, 2024, 9:19 p.m.

Hey Jeanne, so sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy this recipe that much! Indeed veggie Manchurian is a complex recipe, and we will definitely work on it to streamline it as much as possible. Thank you for the feedback and hope you love our other recipes more!!

Alexis S - June 12, 2024, 8:01 a.m.

The sauce in this recipe is amazing! However, the Manchurian balls don't give a lot of flavor or texture to this dish.

PUL small logo PUL Team - June 12, 2024, 5:25 p.m.

Hey Alexis, we're happy to hear you enjoyed the sauce, but sorry to hear the balls missed the mark for you. Thanks for the feedback!

lilly - May 23, 2024, 8:30 p.m.

I can recommend this dish, as it’s easygoing and delicious BUT we’ll need tripple the sauce next time!!!!! It’s too good to be so scarce

D - May 22, 2024, 1:57 p.m.

Usually I go for the recipes that are quick to make (30 min tops) but I’m so happy that we decided to make this one, worth every second 😍😍😍

Suzan Hulleman - May 20, 2024, 6:03 p.m.

Wow, this is sooooo good!!!

vanessa - May 20, 2024, 12:29 p.m.

We love the Manchurians. The entire family (5 of us) enjoyed this very much 8/10 because the balls have soaked up must of the sauce. I made this recipe for 6 servings

Nora Thoms - May 14, 2024, 7:40 p.m.

We all really liked the Manchurians. The sauce was just a bit to salty since we only had normal soy sauce at home. But with the rice it was edible.
After reading the comments I was suprised how easy the recipe was.
We will make them again and try them with sodium reduced soy sauce :-)

PUL small logo PUL Team - May 15, 2024, 1:44 a.m.

Thanks a bunch for taking the time to share your experience with the recipe, Nora, we're so glad that it was enjoyed! 😃

Manuela Suciu - May 13, 2024, 7:58 p.m.

Delicious 🥰 took some time and effort, but definitely worth it.

Jenny Lou - May 13, 2024, 5:09 a.m.

Unfortunately, we didn't find this enjoyable. We'll try a different recipe soon.

PUL small logo PUL Team - May 13, 2024, 7:32 a.m.

Hey Jenny, we're sad to hear this! To help us improve, was there anything in particular you didn't enjoy, such as a specific flavour of texture? We hope you love our other recipes more as we strive for a five-star experience 🫶✨

Athina - May 10, 2024, 3:49 p.m.

These were delicious! I usually avoid making any kind of balls because I tend to mess them up somehow, but these came out perfect! Definitely making them again!

PUL small logo PUL Team - May 10, 2024, 9:42 p.m.

Yayy so happy to hear it was enjoyed, Athina!

Jonathan - May 7, 2024, 7:31 p.m.

So something went completely wrong here. I followed the recipe to the letter, even weighing the veggies (except I used a brush for the oil), and like a proud father I put the balls in the oven, only to discover they became one formless flat blob, so somehow they just completely melted. It feels like something is missing (or wrong quantity) to hold the balls together. Or they were too much cut up in the food processor. The taste is delicious though (like always)

PUL Team - May 7, 2024, 8:16 p.m.

Hi Jonathan, aw we're sad to hear this! The problem could be that the veggies were over-processed, creating too much moisture, or perhaps there wasn't enough of a binding agent like flour to keep them together. To troubleshoot if you give the recipe another try, we'd recommend to try draining or squeezing excess moisture from the veggies before mixing, and consider adding a bit more flour or breadcrumbs to increase binding 🙌

It’s normal that the veggie balls flatten slightly but if they spread too much, you can also tuck the sides in when they come out of the oven to give them a more spherical shape!

Jonathan - May 7, 2024, 10 p.m.

One thing to add to the previous post: it seems like the sauce uses quite a lot of soy sause (1/2cup) and the balls seem to use not so much flour (1/4 cup), could those measurements be switched up, so 1/4 cup soy sause and 1/2 cup flour?

PUL Team - May 8, 2024, 11:31 p.m.

Hey Jonathan, thanks for the question. The amount of flour is indeed 1/4 cup, though to follow up on the above, we've updated the directions to include a note on draining the excess moisture from the blended veggies. Hopefully, this helps to ensure the balls don't deflate too much. We've also adjusted the amount of sauce slightly. Thanks so much for helping us improve what we do, and we hope the recipe flows more smoothly if you give it another go! 😊

Jonathan - May 9, 2024, 9:40 a.m.

Thanks a lot for the extra directions, I'll give them another try soon ☺️

jigy - May 7, 2024, 4:58 a.m.

Can’t wait to try an air fried/baked version. Usually I avoid making veggie Manchurian at home because it is deep fried- excited for a healthier version.

PUL small logo PUL Team - May 7, 2024, 6:38 p.m.

We hope you love it, Jigy!
