The sandwich takes the classic grilled cheese and turns it on its head. A crispy toasted exterior, with gooey cheese filling, spicy kimchi, and crisp, sweet pears makes this an extra special lunch.

I make a variation on this often anyway, but the addition of pear and brushing the outsides with the miso butter really takes it over the edge!

Another winner! I had a bad experience with kimchi in college so I only made this for my husband. He loved it so much he convinced me to try and wow. I never thought I’d say it, but I might actually like kimchi. We opted for the miso paste in the butter and subbed apple for pear and it was fantastic. My husband literally licked his plate, which I’ve never seen him do before, alarming, but cute and very easy to interpret…

I really liked how easy this was to make, I had store bought kimchi. I liked the sandwich, but I feel like it just wasn't for me or hubs. Maybe it was the saltines of the miso butter. We admittedly don't do a ton of salt in every day cooking so I think that was the biggest flavor obstacle for us. I liked the spiciness of the kimchi. Kiddo didn't love but they're 6 lol and the spice was probably a bit much
PUL Team - May 8, 2024, 6:01 p.m.
Hey Brit, thanks for sharing your experience with it! In case it helps, the miso paste can be omitted for a less salty flavour. Being sure to use unsalted butter is also key in case yours is salted. We hope you love our other recipes more though 🙂

Best flavour combo! I would call it my favourite sandwich if it weren't that hard to flip it over without breaking apart. I would highly appreciate some tips on that🙃
PUL Team - March 1, 2024, 6:09 a.m.
Hey Dasha, we're glad you enjoyed the flavour combination! To prevent the sandwich from breaking apart when flipping, we have a couple of tips: 1) lift the sandwich out of the pan (toasted side on the spatula and untoasted facing up), then flip the pan upside down, so that it's over the sandwich, then place the untoasted side against the pan and flip the whole thing so the pan is right-side up again. 2) Add a lid to the pan, so the steam helps to melt the cheese, which will help to hold the sandwich together (different brands of vegan cheese will have different melting properties). You may need to give the sandwich a few extra minutes and an extra flip on each side to help crisp up the outside if using this method. Supporting the sandwich with a wide spatula will also help and gently squishing the sandwich down before flipping can also help it stick together 🤗
Dasha - March 1, 2024, 8:57 a.m.
Thank you very much! I will try it out 😃😁

My first recipe since signing up for the app! 😌
I really enjoyed this sandwich! 😋The pear added a very nice subtle sweetness that was very welcome and complementary with the store-bought spicy kimchi I used. I sliced the pears too thin so I think thicker slices would have been better to add some textural variety to the sandwich. Also known as follow the pictured instructions next time, Emil. 🤦🏽♂️ The griddled bread definitely contributed beautiful crunch though.
Anyway, I highly recommend this sandwich! Keep the pears sliced as shown in the app, use a robust, thick bread and toast that bad boy on the pan nice and crispy and add extra spice if you enjoy heat! You’ll be in for a treat.

Super yummy! The first time I made this, it burned and was a nightmare. The second time I put the miso butter on the inside (because the flavor is amazing), lowered the heat considerably, and sprayed olive oil on the outside. It is still a nightmare to flip, but worth all the bits falling out. Next time will do the halves separately in the pan. If you have a panini maker or grill, this would be easier. If not embrace the mess and enjoy!
